    McCulloch v. Maryland
    The state of Maryland tried to create its own bank and did not wish to compete with the National Banks. The Government of Maryland decided to impose a tax on Second Baltimore banks in an attempt to put the branch out of business. When James William McCulloch refused to pay the tax, McCulloch was taken to court, however, the Government of Maryland won the case. McCuloch was forced into a corner where he either paid the tax or defeated,
  • Gibbons v. Ogden

    Gibbons v. Ogden
    Thomas Gibbons had a license to operate steamboats on the waters of New York. Aaron Ogden decided to do the same thing however without consent from New York. Thomas Gibbons sued Aaron Ogden over the rights to the New York waterways. There were several issues before the Supreme Court before a decision could be made. No decison was made till many years later.

    Shortly following the end of the Civil War, a big issue arose about the use of slaves here in the United States. In 1865 President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves. This put an end to slavery here in the US giving slaves the right to vote and many other privlages.

    Due to the war between the North and South, the war resulted in the increase of the Governments national political power. Many people were employed after the war to deal with the issues that rose up from the war. Income tax was posed to the citizens for the first time to cover the wars expenses.

    The Fourteenth Amendment give the rights to each person due process of law. This allowed all people both men and women to own property here in the US. It also gave people the right to equal protection under the law. This applies to the former slaves as well.

    Presdient Roosevelt created something called the "New Deal". At the time the states were in control of handeling unemployment and poverty. Under this "New Deal" Presdient Roosevelt created ways of putting people to work by creating such programs as the WPA which meant putting many unskilled men to work.

    President Barack Obama introduced into law the Affordable Care Act. This is a law that requires all United States Citizens to have Medical Insurance. Under this new law, many hospitals and physicians would have to revamp their offices both financially and clinically. This would mean setbacks for many in the medical field.
