    Articles of Confederation
    This document was our Country's first form of a set of laws.IT gave almost all power to the states in the hope that the government could not become corrupt.But in the end failed by not giving enough power to the government to help enforce any of the states laws.
  • Constitutional Convention

    Constitutional Convention
    This convention was created to form a new government that had the power to actually enforce the laws made.After the Articles of Confederation had been seen as not being successful many states felt that a change needed to be made. So the got together and drafted a new government with a central government with powers that were spelled out in the new constitution.
  • Commerce Clause( Article 1,Section 8, Clause 3)

    Commerce Clause( Article 1,Section 8, Clause 3)
    Gives Congress the power to regulate interstate,forgien and Indian commerce.The government normally uses this clause along with the Tenth Amendment to extend there enumerated powers. By doing this they the power away from the states and give it to the federal government.

    This Amendment to the US Constitution stated that any power not given to congress in the constitution are reserved for the states.With the addition of this amendment to the Constitution it gave the states the amount of power they required to pass the constitution. this amendment gives the states the right to create laws for there states as they see there needs more directly.

    Gibbons v. Ogden
    This court case ruled that the fires between New York Nd New Jersey were interstate commerce and then regulated by the central government.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Dred Scott v. Sanford
    Denied the freedom of Dred Scott even though he had been living in a free state. This case gave the federal gov't the power to decide his fate under Article III of the Constitution.
  • Civil War

    Civil War
    An American battle fought between northern and southern states as the union and confederacy. The confederacy lost and it gave more power to the federal gov't as the states were no longer on their own. The confederacy was the forced to join the union and all of the laws or regulations that came with it.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    This amendment gives citizenship to all those " born or naturalized in the United States." This amendment gave power to the federal gov't by giving them the right to decide to whom citizenship is granted. The enslavement of people was now in the hands of the federal government to decide.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    Case against equality between whites and blacks in railway cars. This case gave the state gov't more power as they were given the ability to decide how the equality of races could be handled.
  • Pure Food and Drug Act

    Pure Food and Drug Act
    This act helps protect those against harmful or poisonous substances that are consumed or prescribed to the public. Gave power to the federal gov't as they were able to decide what substances can be harmful to people
  • 16th Amendment

    16th Amendment
    Changed part of Article I in the Constitution. Gives the federal gov't the power to collect taxes on income without having to go through the state or local governments
  • Gitlow v. New York

    Gitlow v. New York
    This case was about a democrat that was trying to publish a "left wing manifesto" that published his viewpoints. The case ended in the state gov't deciding that anyone who supported the manifesto would be breaking the law, giving power to the state government.
  • New Deal

    New Deal
    The New Deal was a set of policies put forth by Franklin Delaware Roosevelt during the great depression to try and get our country going again. These policies started a new area of government called Cooperative Federalism. These policies while giving the federal government more power didn't over reach and worked with the state government in a sort of collaboration.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Four cases that focused on the segregation in public school systems between the races. Cases ended with the supreme court judge throwing out the "separate but equal" clause, giving more power to the federal gov't by stepping in on the control over the school systems.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Outlaws the discrimination in labor and civil rights based on race, religion, color, sex, national origin. This act was enacted by Congress and gives the federal government the power.
  • Roe v. Wade

    Roe v. Wade
    A court case involving a woman's right to an abortion for a Texas resident. Ended with the court ruling a right to abortion being under a right of privacy, granting her the right to the abortion. Gives power to the federal gov't by them going over a state law.
  • Election of Ronald Reagan

    Election of Ronald Reagan
    He created the new federalism when he was elected. This, in turn, loosened the grip of the federal gov't on the states. This also lead to increasing power to the states.
  • McCulloch v. Maryland

    McCulloch v. Maryland
    This court case ruled that state governments could not take instruments of the federal government employed in the execution of congressional powers. This ruling gave the federal government more power on the grounds that taxation is normally left up to the states but in this instance was ruled to be under federal jurisdiction.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The Americans of Disability Act stated that no state should have a system that did not allow persons with mental illness to be treated in the community. This in turn gave the federal gov't more power to regulate state law.
  • Planned Parenthood v. Casey

    Planned Parenthood v. Casey
    This court case surrounded abortion and ended with the reaffirmation of the previous supreme court ruling under the privacy rights though it came with the creation of the Undue burden clause. Gave power to the federal government by giving them justification to change laws around abortion.
  • United States v. Lopez

    United States v. Lopez
    This case was held as a trial against a child that brought a fire-arm into a school zone. This case gave state the power as the court ruled that the law was unconstitutional making it a state matter and not a federal matter.
  • Printz v. United States

    Printz v. United States
    This court case changed the Brady Violence Handgun Protection Act. The state gov't was given power by decision that the necessary and proper Clause does not give the federal government jurisdiction on this matter.
  • September 11th,2001

    September 11th,2001
    On Sept. 11, 2001 a plane crashed into the pentagon, the twin towers, and a plane was run into a field in Pennsylvania. This national crisis was the cause of an attack from an enemy group which lead to our overall fight against terrorism. Due to this event the federal government was given more power over the state on the grounds of protecting the country.

    An act for the education of children. Gives the federal gov't power as it authorizes federal government education programs. When it was previously a states jurisdiction.
  • Affordable Care Act ( Obama Care)

    Affordable Care Act ( Obama Care)
    This act, also known as Obama care, was passed to ensure everyone has insurance. This act took the right of the state to control the insurances and gave some power to the federal government.
