    Benjamin Thompson
    Benjamin Thompson was the first to label nutrition as a science in the late 1800’s and he invented the first range with temperature controls.

    Wrote “A Treatise on Domestic Economy” in 1841 – the first FACS text book recognized by the Department of Education and wrote 33 text books as well.

    W.O Atwater
    Invented the Bomb Calorimeter and wrote nutrition bulletins at Richard’s request. He was also considered to be the “Father of Nutrition”

  • Morrill Act 1862

    Morrill Act 1862
    The Morrill Act 1862 helped states in financing schools that would teach agriculture and mechanic arts. This Act granted 30,000 acres of public land to every state.

    Lulu C. Graves
    Lulu C. Graves was the first president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She was dedicated to helping the government conserve food and improve the public's health and nutrition during World War I.

  • The Food Pyramid

    The Food Pyramid
    The Food Pyramid was introduced in 1992. The USDA introduced these guidelines to recommend servings for each food group. The Food Pyramid became a recognizable nutrition tool for many people.

    American Home Economics Association (AHEA)
    American Home Economics Association was founded by Ellen H. Richards. The name got voted to be changed to the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS).
