Robert Dooley Sr. served two tours in Vietnam as a supply sergeant. Was the from 1965-1966 and 1970-1971 in Da Nang and somewhere just outside of Saigon. Vietnam was hot and humid, especially during the monsoon season. For security reasons he couldnt always say where he was. -
Injured Soldiers
Even though he was supply, he did see a lot of injured soldiers and soldiers in body bags being loaded on the aircrafts to be shipped to nearby hospitals or back to te United States. -
Saigon
In Saigon, he also saw buisnesses that catered to the American soilders who got bombed -
Trusting
He had to be careful as to whom he could trust. Vietcong were known to use to recruit South Vietnamese children to help them with their killings. The Vietcong also would put spies inside the camps so they could get nessary information and caculations to a certain tent that they felt needed to be gotten rid of. -
Living arrangements
He lived in tents so that he could be moved at a moment's notice. He told a story one time about a time they moved their tents to another location and then the next day his last location was bombed. -
Rifle work
While riding in the jeep, as a passenger, he would have to have his rifle ready to use, especially if they were passing a place that had thick vegetation. -
Christmas
He sent my aunts vietnamese dolls. They had to be careful because at that time bombs were being put in the dolls to explode in flight or when playing with them. They were one of the lucky ones that did not get the bomb. -
Communitcation
Communitcations to family, in the United States, were mostly by letters. They were not always delivered in date order. This was the only way to contact family, unless you were fortunate enough to call collect through the short wave radio. This was difficult because of the long pauses between conversations. -
