The main character Perry gets drafted into VIetnam

his medical profile does not follow him
He has a a bad knee which would normally not allow him to go into combat but his profile didn't get to vietnam so he was put into a squad. -
He becomes friends with a squad member who likes to be called peewee.

Racical Problems
Since Perry, Peewee and another soldier named Johnson are african american they were sometimes under certain commanders given more dangerous jobs or more dangerous spots on a patrol. -
Perry was sent on patrol with another company
WHile he was on a patrol with another company they thought they saw enemy forces and got into a firefight but they actually were fighting against their own men and 15 people were killed. -
Friendly fire
There were an estimated 8,000 occurrences of friendly fire in the vietnam war. -
While on a patrol a soldier in their squad stepped on a land mine.
A new guy named Jenkins was on patrol with Perry and Peewee when he stepped on a landmine which killed him and really shaked up Perry and some of the other squad members. -
There main commander Lieutenant Carroll gets killed
Everyone in Perry's squad respected Lieutenant Carroll alot and it hit the squad hard when he was killed during a North Vietnamese attack around the time of the Tet Offensive. -
Perry gets his first confirmed kill
While searching a village for any North Vietnamese or viet cong he goes into a room where a viet cong was wating for him and was about to shoot him when his gun jammed. Then Perry shot and killed him. -
Helped the South vietnamese military
During their last battle they were doing a joint mission with U.S and South Vietnamese troops. -
Perry and Peewee are both injured during a battle
There was intense fighting and they got lost from their squad and they both were hit but were able to avoid capture. -
He is awarded a Purple Heart
During the battle where he was wounded he helped save another soldier in his squad named Monaco. So for that he was awarded a Purple Heart -
They go home
After the last battle Perry and Peewee get sent home
