Luthania Declares Independence
All members of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania signed the document. This was the first time a Union Republic declared independence from the Soviet Union. -
Soviets Attack Vilnius
Between January 11th and 13th, the Soviets attacked unarmed citizens in the capital of Lithunia as a result of Lithuania declaring their independence. 13 people were killed and 1000 people were injured. -
Yeltsin Elected
on June 12th, Boris Yeltsin was elected by popular vote as President of Russia. He was the first president of Russia. -
Yugoslavs Invade Croatia and Slovenia
On June 25th, Slovenia and Croatia declared their independence. June 27th of 1991, the Serbian-led Yugoslav army invaded Slovenia and Croatia. -
August Coup
Hard-liners detain President Gorbachev of the Soviet Union and demand he resign as Soviet President. The coup collapsed after two days and Gorbachev returned to government. -
Troop Refuse Orders from State
After the August Coup, troops were ordered by the State Committee to attack parliament. The troops refused. -

Gorbachev Resigns
On Christmas Day of 1991, Gorbachev announced he was resignign from his position as president of the Soviet Union. He was the last president of the Soviet Union. -

Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Many people disagreed wwith this situation. -
Yeltsin-Chechnyan Treaty
President Boris Yeltsin of Russia and the leader of Chechnya signed a peace treaty to end a century-old conflict between to the two parties. Confrontation between Russia and Chechnya was said to be over.
