Nic's Birthdate
Nic was born in San Francisco at dawn. Vicki's contractions wpere occurring at around midnight. Vicki and David are both enratured by the new baby. David calls Nic his beautiful boy. They both prepared for the baby months in advance by painting the nursery and buying funiture for him. Nic meant the world to his parents. -
Nic begins kindergarten
Nic attends kindergarten at a 100 year old building in San Francisco, where his dad lives. Nic is now 5 years old. Nic enjoys playing tetherball, basketball, freeze tag, and broom hockey. He displays his creative sde while using clay and finger painting. Other kids teased him on the clothes he wore but David was proud of Nic's confidence and individuality. -
Nic copes with divorce
David feels that the divorce isnt the best lifestyle for Nic. David decides to take a break from dating and spend time with Nic. Their lives are much quieter. On the weekends they ride the cable car to Chinatown for dim sum and firecrackers. They also go to view movies at the Castro Theatre. They play games after Nic finishes his homework on weekdays. They also cook together and read because Nic loves books. -
Nic gets a new mother
Nic is trying to ingratiate himself with this whole new life. He finds out that she is permanently staying with them and he writes a report about her for school. They tease eachother a lot and sometimes Nic will get mad if she teases him too much. They always order milshakes when they go out to eat and they play a word game with eachother all the time. Nic calls Karen, Mama or Mamacita or KB. -
Nic's marijuana bag found
David picks Nic up from school one day and he smells the cigarette smoke because Nic reeks of it. He denies that he smoked but he actually did. It occurred behind the gym and he tells David that he will never do it again. David also spots a bag of marijuana in his backapck as he is packing an overnight bag for Nic. Nic is in 7th grade when he begins using. David talks to Nic about it as any parent would do. He did some drugs as a kid too but isnt going to accept this kind of behavior from Nic. -
Nic deals with a new baby brother
Nic just sits and stares at Jasper once he is born. Nic enjoys playing with Jasper. David and Karen try to make the new life with Jasper easy for Nic to handle. Nic finds that there is a benefit of having a baby in the family. Many girls come over to play with Jasper and Nic is so happy to have the girls at the house. Around this time, Nic stops hanging out with the carpool kids and begins hanging out with a group of guys who like skateboarding, girls, and heavy metal music. -
Nic deals with a new baby sister
Marguerite is born at 7 a.m. and they decide to call her Daisy as a nickname. She has curly black hair and gorgeous, bright eyes. Nic helps bathe and dress Daisy once she is born. Nic never thought that he would have a family like this because he says that to Karen. Nic spends more time with Jasper than he does with Daisy. Karen is usually with Daisy most of the time. David is over joyed with the thought of parenthood but is also a bit vulnerable. -
Nic joins the swim team
Nic is a new sophomore and he joins the swim team. Nic is a very strong swimmer. He enjoys the friendly atmosphere of all the swimmers on his team. His coach inspires him and all he wants to do is please him. Nic is elected co-captain of the water polo team. Nic is behaving himself and focusing on the swim team. David and Karen are really enjoying this happy Nic. He isnt allowing the negative people around him influence him. -
Nic's new therapist
Nic agrees to seeing a new therapist. Nic is disgusted and is filled with unease. They both shake hands and disappear into the therapy room. Nic finishes with a smile and walks with happiness. He feels that he was an amazing therapist and thought he was much different from the others. Karen and David also meet with the therapist and the therapist feels that college is best for Nic. He feels that college may straighten him out. -
Nic calls David for help
Nic doesnt go home for 4 days but then calls David for help. Jasper is worried and begins to cry beacuse he misses Nic. David is worried that Nic isnt going to be alright. He finds him in an alley. David wants him to go to rehab. Nic said that he learned his lesson and that he doesnt want to go to rehab. He said he knows how dangerous meth is now and that he will never mess with it again. David is worried because he had a bad experience with meth and doesnt want anything bad to happen to Nic. -
Nic's addiction causes David to go to AA
David went to an AA meeting and never thought he would have to go to one. Nic feels sorry for him that he has to deal with his addiction. He wanted to protect Nic so he never went to the AA meetings. Karen joins David because she wants to be involved in his life and help him out through tough times. -
Nic overdoses
Nic overdoses and Nic's stepfather calls David. Hes the one who got the call and thats when he told David. Nic is in critcial condition and is also on life support. Nic went unconscious the night before. If the EMT team didnt react as quick as they did then Nic could have died. Karen is getting nervous that he might not be alright and David is very worried that he may die. David doesnt know if he has died and gone to heaven or if he is still alive. -
Nic mails Jasper a letter
They all say their goodbyes at the airport and they board seperate planes. Nic gets on the plane for LA and the rest f the family is going to San Francisco. As David and Jasper go to pick up the mail there is a letter for Jasper from Nic. Nic wants to apologize more than just saying "im sorry." He apologizes for stealing the money and repays him. He says he loves him and cares for him and that he will always be there for him. -
David gets a cerebral hemorrhage
David felt as if his head was exploding and told Karen to call 911. He was rushed to the hospital. They do a CT scan right away on him. Jasper and Daisy are sleeping at Karen's parents' house during all of this. During all of this, all David can think about is Nic and if he is alright. He cant remember Nic's number but he wants to know where he is because he is worried about him. Nic ends up calling and he is fine. He has talked to Karen every single day that David has been in the hospital. -
Nic's girlfriend contacts David
Z emails David and says that Nic left her at the market in the morning. Nic said he would be back in 15 minutes and that he was just running to his mom's house. He didnt come back for more than 4 hours so her friend got her a cab. She stated that it was an emergency. David got extremely nervous. Nic was going to Vicki's to steal her computer. Vicki says its his choice if he wants to go to rehab or get arrested.
