Montag Burns Books
The book starts out with Montag finding joy in burning books. He is a fireman, but he starts fires instead of putting them out. -
Montag meets Clarisse
Montag meets Clarisse when he is walking home. She guesses that Montag is a fireman and starts talking to him.She talks about her family and how things used to be (firemen putting out fires). -
Montag finds Mildred who has overdosed.
After his talk with Clarisse, Montag went in his room and found a dead looking mildred and an empty sleeping tablet bottle. After freaking out, Montag called the ambulence to come pick her up. They cleaned out her stomach and said she would be fine. -
Mildred wakes up and has no recolection of what happened
Mildred wakes up and says that she feels terrible and is hungry. It is shown that she has no recolection of the previous night because she thinks that she had a hangover from a party the night before. Montag then tells her about how he found the empty bottle. She denies doing anything that reckless and Monatag leaves it. Clarisse then talks about how she is going to be on a play that she has no idea what its about. -
Clarisse asks Montag if he's happy
this question is what starts Montag's journey to opening his mind. After Clarisse asked this question, she walked into her house. Montag told himself that he was happy, but then started thinking about his life. -
Montag meets up with Clarisse again
Montag finds Clarisse and they talk about walking in the rain and tasting it. Then she talks about the dandilions showing weather you're in love or not. She tries it on Montag and tells him that he is not in love. He then gets upset and says that he is in love. Clarisse apologizes and then says that she has to meet a psychiatrist. -
Montag burns the women and her books
Once the firemen arrive to the scene, they find a house filled with piles and piles of books, but unlike what Montag is usually sees, there is stubborn women who won't leave the books. Beatty tells the women to leave, but she refuses. Montag tries to haul her out of the place, but she puts the place on fire with a kitchen match. -
Montag asks where him and Mildred first met
Montag comes home, lies in bed, then asks mildred how they first met. She didn't know. Montag feels empty and is sad. -
Mildred tells Montag that Clarisse died.
Montag thinks about how he hadn't seen a Clarisse in a while and Mildred remembers to tell him that Clarisse died by getting hit by a car 4 days ago. Her family moved out too. Montag was suprised and Mildred went to sleep. -
Beatty pays a visit to Montag
After such a tramatic experience with the woman and the books, from the day before Montag feels sick and doesn't go to work. Mildred tries to convince him, but it is no use. Beatty arrives at the house calmy understanding the trama it has caused to Montag. He assures Montag of his positiion as a firemen, and tries to explain the importance of being a firemen to society. He goes to talk about the past, and how their job as a firemen helps create peace. -
Mildred finds out about the books
Once Beatty leaves, Montag confesses to mildred what he has done. He comes clean, admits they don't have good relationsip and asks her if she is happy saying he isn't. He reveal his hiding place of the books, in the back of the grille of the air conditioning system. He drops all the books to th e ground he has collected from the fires, and tells Mildred they are both together in this. Mildred moans and grows frantic, but Montag grabs her and tells her it is okay saying they will burn the books. -
Beatty gives Montag a speach about the history of firefighters.
Captain Beatty comes by to check on Montag, saying that he guessed Montag would be calling in sick that day. He tells Montag that every fireman runs into the “problem” he has been experiencing sooner or later, and he relates to him the history of their profession. -
Mildred and Beatty see the book under Montag's pillow
Mildred starts to get bored while Beatty is talking, and she gets up and begins straightening up the room. In doing so, she finds the book behind Montag’s pillow and tries to call attention to it, but Montag screams at her to sit down. Beatty pretends not to notice and goes on talking. -
Beatty keeps talking
Beatty keeps talking and talks about how people like Clarrise came to be and how she's better off dead. Montag asked what would happen if a fireman accidentally took a book with him and Betty said they would get 48 hours to burn it before he would come to burn it. Betty asks Montag if he'll come to work later. Montag says maybe but silently vows to never return. -
A Knock At the Door
In all the hysteria of that one voice at the door, Mildred panics thinking Beatty will come back to burn the books and themselves. They decide not to answer the voice, and remain still and quiet. Once the person who knocked leaves, Mildred and Montag start to read the books. They read one line and Mildred jumps saying the Captain was right, it doesn't mean anything. Montag tells her we have to start at the beginning of the books to understand the books. -
Montag and Mildred read the whole afternoon.
Montag and Mildred spend the afternoon reading. The Mechanical Hound comes and sniffs at the door. Montag speculates about what it was that made Clarisse so unique. Mildred refuses to talk about someone who is dead and complains that she prefers the people and the pretty colors on her TV walls to books. Montag feels that books must somehow be able to help him out of his ignorance, but he does not understand what he is reading and decides that he must find a teacher. -
Montag Visits Faber
Montag has possibly the last bible left and he does not know what to make of it. He takes the train to visit Faber, an old man he met awhile ago, and see what he can make of it. He panics while taking the train to Faber. Faber, paranoid due to Montag being a fireman, opens the door cautiously until he sees the book and begins to stare in awe. He then begins to explain to Montag about the importance these books hold. Faber insists that it’s not the books themselves that Montag is looking for. -
Montag comes up with a plan
Montag suggests planting books in the homes of firemen to discredit the profession and see the firehouses burn. Faber doesn’t think that this would get to the heart of the problem. Faber says they just need to be patient, since the coming war will eventually mean the death of the TV families. Montag concludes that they could use that as a chance to bring books back. -
Faber agrees to Montag's plan
Faber still doesn't want to do Montag's plan so Montag threatens him by pulling pages out of the bible. Faber agrees and Montag suggests giving Captain Betty a fake. Faber says that can work and gives Montag an ear radio. -
Mildred's friend's are over and he reads them poetry
Montag comes home and sees that Mildred's friends are there. They are in the parlor and Monag turns it off. He tries to get the girls talking but they just angered him. He then brought out a book of poetry and read to them. In order to cover it up, Mildred said it was an anual tradition that the firestation did to convince people how ridiculous books are. He reads Dover Beach and Mrs. Phelps bursts into tears. Ms. Bowels gets mad at Montag and says that the book is evil. She leaves. -
Montag goes to see Beatty
Montag heads off to the fire station, and Faber both scolds and consoles him on the way. Montag hands his book over to Beatty, who throws it into the trashcan without even looking at it. Beatty then quotes a bunch of books to confuse him and convince him that books are better burned than read. Montag is so afraid of making a mistake with Beatty that he cannot move his feet. Faber tells him not to be afraid of mistakes because they sharpen the mind. -
They arrive at Montag's house.
The alarm goes off so Betty drives with Montag to the adress listed. They arrive at their destination, and Montag sees that it is his own house. Montag gazes at Clarisse’s empty house, and Beatty, guessing that he has fallen under her influence, chastizes him. Mildred rushes out of the house with a suitcase and is driven away in a taxi, and Montag realizes she must have called in the alarm. Beatty orders Montag to burn the house by himself with his flamethrower and after arrests him. -
Montag kills Beatty
Beatty sees that Montag is listening to something and strikes him on the head. The radio falls out of Montag’s ear, and Beatty picks it up, saying that he will have it traced to find the person on the other end. Betty says more literary quotations and agravates Montag. Montag then burns Betty with his flamethrower. The other firemen do not move, and he knocks them out. -
Montag runs
The mechanical dog comes and injects some sort of anesthetic in Montag's leg. He then burns the dog with the flamethrower. Montag struggled to get away with his numb leg but got to the backyard. There he got 4 books that Mildred didn't burn amd went down an alley. He realized the severity of what he had done and began to cry. Montag runs off the numbness. He then uses a sea shell radio and hears the police warning people about him. -
Montag keeps running
Montag hears that there is a war starting over the radio. He is almost hit by a car and thinks its the police but finds out it is a bunch of kids. He gets mad and wonders if they were the ones who killed Clarisse. He then goes to a co-workers house and plants a book inside. He goes to a phone booth and calls it in. -
Montag goes to Faber's house
Montag goes over to Faber's house and tells him what happened. He gives Faber money and is told to go to a camp of runaways like himself. Faber says that they should meet up if they both survive at St. Louis, Faber turn on the Tv and finds out that there is a new mechanical hound. Montag takes a suitcase full of Faber’s old clothes amd tells him how to get rid of Montag’s scent so the Hound will not be led there. He then runs away. -
Montag is running for his life
Montag keeps track of the dog by looking at other people's Tv's. All the people are told to look outside their doors for him on the count of 10. Luckly Montag is able to make it to the river by the time they open their doors. Montag puts on Faber's clothes and covers himself in alchohol. He flows with the river until he ends up in the countryside. He walks down a path and feels like Clarisse walkes there. -
Montag finds the group of runnaways
Montag finds 5 men and the leader invites him to join them. The leader says his name is Granger. Granger gives him a drink that will help cover his smell and shows him a portable Tv. The police and the hound lost his trail at the river and went after a fake Montag. The announcer pronounces him dead. -
Montag is welcomed into the group
Granger tells Montag welcome. He explains who everyone is and that they all have a book memorized. Granger says that Montag is important because he represents their “back-up copy” of the Book of Ecclesiastes. Granger says that they are waiting for the world to need books so they can be of some use. -
Granger tells Montag about his grandpa
Montag says he left his wife in the city and wouldn't really feel anything if she dies. He feels bad about this so Granger tells him about his grandpa. He says that his grandpa did a lot of kind things and left an impression on him. He says that is the kind of thing that leaves an impression on people. -
The city gets destroyed
Suddenly, they see bombs drop on the city and destroy it. The men are knocked down by the shock wave. Montag mentally pictured Mildred before she died and remembers that they met in Chicago. Afterward, Montag remembers the Book of Ecclesiastes and repeats it to himself. The aftershock dies down, and the men rise and eat breakfast. Granger compares mankind to a phoenix rising again.The men turn upriver toward the city to help the survivors rebuild from the ashes.
