Mildred runs out of the house to a car as we find out that she is the one that turned Montag in.

Captain Beatty scolds montag about his books and told him that he is "a burden". He makes him burn his house and everything he has ever owned by himself. After he is finished burning the books, he is arrested.

Beatty strikes Montag and his earpiece flies out of his ear onto the sidewalk. Beatty listens to Faber in the earpiece for a moment before switching it off and putting it in his pocket. Beatty then states his intent to track down Faber through the earpiece.

After listening to Beatty's endless taunts and being forced to burn his own house, Montag snaps and burns Beatty alive with a flamethrower.

After Montag kills Beatty and knocks out the other fireman, he sees the mechanical hound coming at him. Montag shoots flame at the hound but it stabs him in the leg before it dies.

After painfully forcing himself to his feet, Montag returns to his garden and grabs some books that were left behind by Mildred.

While hobbling down an alleyway Montag has a realization that Beatty wanted to die. He thinks about how Beatty had all the time in the world to move out of the way of the flamethrower and chose not too. He also realizes that he didn't want to kill anyone, not even Beatty.

As Montag is searching his pockets for money he hears an alarm saying that Guy Montag is wanted for murder. He continues to run until he realizes he doesn't really know where to go. After this realization and thinking about it a little, he decides to seek out Faber.

On his way to Faber's house, Montag is forced to cross a seemingly empty street. While he is crossing, a car suddenly appears speeding towards him. Montag panics and walks as fast as he can trying to cross but the car is too close already. Luckily the car misses him, only hitting "1/16th of an inch" of his finger.

Montag puts one of his books in a fellow fireman's house, hoping that it will be burned and that the fireman will get karma for what he did to others.

Montag arrives at Faber's house and talks to him. Faber tells him to follow the river and look for "hobo camps" full of intellectuals.

After being chased by a mechanical hound and following the river, Montag ends up at a "hobo camp" like Faber described.

One of the homeless people Montag talks to declares that the government will find and kill a scapegoat to save face, moments later the exact things appears on the tv. A random man is killed by the hound and the announcers declare that Montag is dead.

After discussing with the men for a while, jets suddenly flash over the city and completely obliterate it. After the aftershock dies down, the men prepare to return to the city and attempt to rebuild the world with the books they have memorized.
