  • Battle Of Lexington and Concord

    The first Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American revolutionary war. The British commander in Boston had heard of supplies of powder and weapons being kept by patriots.
  • Declaration Of Independence

    It declared independence. A statement adopted by the second continental congress. Made sure everyone had the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness
  • Battle of Saratoga

    The main turning point of the revolutionary war.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    The French are helping the continental army with men, weapons and warships. The americans and the French will corner the British on a small peninsula and bombard them with cannon fire. The British will surrender and end the American Revolution
  • Northwest Oridinance

    Adopted by the second continental congress. Provided a method for admitting new states to the Union from the territory and listed a bill of rights. Added 6 new states. It was also passed under the articles of confederation.
  • Alien & Sedition Acts

    Made it illegal for anyone to say anything "false , scandalous, and malicious". It meant to weaken the republican party. These laws included new powers to deport foreigners as well as making it harder for new immigrants to vote.
  • Marbury v Madison

    Established the principle of judicial review , the power of the federal courts to declare legislative and executive acts unconstitutional. Helped exemplify the US system of "checks and balances. Also known as necessary proper clause.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Acquisition of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France. Added 13 states. Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States.
  • Missouri Compromise

    A settle dispute between slave and free states, contained several laws passed during 1820-1821. The Missouri compromise was repealed by the Kansas Nebraska act.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    A united states policy of opposing European colonialism in the Americas beginning. Great Britain supported this policy. Written and negotiated by Adams.
  • Nulification Crisis

    Was caused by the introduction of a series of protective tariffs. Confrontation between the state of south Carolina and the federal government in 1832 over the former attempt to declare null and void within the state federal tariffs.

    It led quickly to war with mexico in 1846.
  • Mexican Cession

    Refers to lands surrendered of ceded to the united states by mexico at the end of the Mexican war.
  • Oregon Territory

    Dispute between the U.S and Britain was settled with the signing of the Oregon territory.
  • Compromise of 1850

    A package of five separate bills passed by the United States congress. For the north it admitted California as a free state, for the south stronger fugitive slave law. Slave trade was outlawed in Washington D.C.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Allowed each territory to decide the issue of slavery on the basis of popular sovereignty. The act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36'30.

    small civil war fought between proslavery and antislavery advocates for control of the new territory of Kansas under the doctrine of popular sovereignty.

    A presidential proclamation and executive order issued by Abraham Lincoln. It declared that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are henceforward shall be free. It applied only to states that had seceded from the united states leaving slavery untouched.

    This amendment was passed by congress. This amendment formally abolished slavery.
  • 14th Amendment

    This amendment grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the united states which included former slaves. One of the reconstruction amendments. It forbids any state to deny any person life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  • 15 Amendement

    Granted African American men the right to vote. Was the third and last of the reconstruction amendments.
  • Plessy v Ferguson

    A landmark decision of the united states supreme court. It upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities. A doctrine that came to be known as separate but equal. It gave constitutional sanction to laws designed to achieve racial segregation.
