    Korean War
Fear of communist taken over by Asia was demonstrated when N. Korea invaded S. Korea to begin the Korean War. Because the USA and UN stabilized the Korean frontier along the 38th Parallel they were able to prevent the invading communists above the 38th Parallel separating the peninsula. In the end, the Korean Peninsula at the 38th Parallel still seperates communist North Korea and democratic South Korea.

    *Space Race
This was also 1 of the most significant economic events in my opinion as well. When Soviets launched Sputnik I it drew the United States into a “Space Race” with the Soviets. This race caused millions of job openings & it grew local economies. It led to several prominent astronauts such as Neil Armstrong who inspired young people to want to pursue a career in this field. TV was invented so Americans witnessed Neil A. and Buzz A. become the first to step foot on the moon with Apollo 11.

    *Vietnam War

One of the most difficult and most significant economic events (in my opinion) that took place within this time period. The war was between communist, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The US defended South Vietnam by sending troops (more than 5,000), supplies, and other materials. More than 58,000 American lives were lost in Vietnam. During this time Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson passed The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution to conduct military operations in Vietnam.
  • Tet Offensive

This occurred during the traditional lunar New Year festival. One hundred South Vietnamese cities were attacked. The Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) forces and U.S. forces campaigned to counter-attack Vietcong.
