Expulsion of Acadia

  • The Acadian colony was originally established by the French.

  • Treaty of Utrecht Acadians became British subjects and those who wanted to side with the French were given a year to leave.

  • Britain asked Acadians to take a loyalty oath to the British, but they refused. They did not want to get in the middle of a French and British war.

  • Paul Mascarene (military officer, French born, British solider) was sent to settle disputes in Acadia between the French and British but was unsuccessful.

    The French built the Fortress of Louisbourg as a military and naval area on the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River. It became an area of commerce and trade for the French.

  • British built their own fortress and brought in army and settlers to Nova Scotia in an attempt to outnumber the French Acadians.

  • The British were becoming increasingly concerned about the Acadians and their loyalty to them.
