Camera Obscura
The oldest predecessor of the Camera is the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura's main features were that it consisted of small darkened rooms with light admitted through a single tiny hole, had a result of an inverted image of the outside scene was cast on the opposite wall, which was usually whitened, and was used for viewing eclipses of the Sun without endangering the eyes. Daguerreotype
A predecessor of the Camera that came after the Camera Obscura is the Daguerreotype. The Daguerreotype's main features were that it used a sliding-box design, had lens placed in the front box, and it had a second, slightly smaller box, slid into the back of the larger box. Source: Link text -

Camera Next-Gen
