Real Hearts were used
This time was before there was any technology to support or replace the heart. At this time, if people had fatal heart abnormalities or anything, it was almost inevitable that they would, in fact, die. There was also limited technology that supported any other organ in the human body (lungs, liver, etc.).

Dog Heart Substitute
a doctor named John Gibbon was able to create a device that can be used for 5 and a half hours that substitutes for the cardiac function of a dog. This device was used to keep the dogs alive during their heart operations.This was a step forward in the technology development of artificial hearts. APA:

First heart/lung machine
A doctor named John Gibbon (the man who created the dog heart machine) successfully used a heart-lung machine in open heart surgery. He used it on an 18 year old woman in the US. She was able to recover, and she lived until 1980. This was a big deal. The New York Times called it a phenomenon. APA:

Artificial Dog Heart

Human Artificial Heart usage
In 2000, a man from Israel was the first to recieve the Jarvik 2000, a pump attached to the heart. It was a big bulky pump that was used for patients who were suffering from heart failure. The doctor who developed it was named Dr. Robert Jarvik. APA:

Fully Artificial Heart Approval
In 2002, the artificial heart was approved by the FDA. They had approved it only for people who needed to completely replace their heart. These hearts were only temporary though, and would have to be replaced. APA:
