Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 (2). It was initially invented for automated information sharing between scientists in institutions across the world. His idea was to merge the new technologies of computers, hypertext, and data networks into one powerful global information system (8). This revolutionized the world's access to information and paved the way for internet communication (13). This picture was taken at his workplace, CERN, on July 11th, 1994.
