In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg's printing press was invented. It was one of the earliest forms of creation in Media and sparked the first flames of what would turn out to be one of the greatest rises of technology in the industrialized world. -
Louis Daguerre Produces the First Publicly Available Photography Process
Louis Daguerre, a French photographer, created daguerrotypes, a photograph created using an iodine-sensitized silvered plate and mercury vapor. It was widely used between 1840-1850. -
The Telephone is Created
Alexander Graham Bell created the first landline telephone that was commercially available to the public. This completely changed the way people were able to communicate and was vastly more useful than the before standard of morse code, since there was no translation involved. -
First Commercially Successful Typewriter is Invented
Christopher Latham Sholes, while not the inventor of the first typewriter, helped develop it. He was known for making the QWERTY layout. This layout is still the most used typing format, unlike Dvorak which you will have a hard time coming across unless you find a product specifically designed for it. -
Phonograph Records Become a Predominant Form of Media
Emile Berliner's gramophone was invented along with his Berliner discs. Berliner disks are very similar to modern vinyl records, and some call Berliner "The Father of Modern Music". -
The First Television Drama is Broadcasteda
On September 11, 1928, The Queen's Messenger, a drama at the time, was broadcasted to 3-inch televisions set up across the New York area. This was the first channel that was broadcast to televisions. -
Disney's "Steamboat Willie" is the First Cartoon to Utilize a Fully Synchronized Soundtrack
"Steamboat Willie" was the first cartoon to utilize not only video, but audio as well. It's soundtrack was developed specifically for it and lined up with the video. In an age of silent films, it not only stood out, but moved the film industry forward. -
First 3-Color Film is Produced
Becky Sharp, a movie produced in the mid-1930's, was the first film to use the more advanced 3-color technicolor process for the movie. During this period, most "color" films were only processed with 2-colors, green and red process. However, the 3rd process of Technicolor utilized red, cyan-green, green and orange-red. While it may seem insignificant, it greatly increased the colors and quality of movies at the time. -
Cellular Data is Introduced
Today, thanks to cellular data, we are able to stream Full HD video on cellular data from virtually anywhere (unless you have Sprint) on our phones. We have internet access at home or away because of it. However, the first use of it, 1G, which was made in 1980, had a 150 MHz band. For reference, 5G, the newest form of cellular data has a range of between 30-300GHz. (1000MHz=1GHz) 1G was capable of sending text messages. That was it. -
Sony Introduces the First Consumer-Grade Video Camera
The BMC-100P was Sony's first home video recorder. It utilized Sony's proprietary betamax analog format for recording. Some of the camera's features were manual focus, 6x zoom and a viewfinder. You can find one with minimal damage for about $300 on eBay. -
World Wide Web Goes Live to the World
On the 6th of August, 1991, the world would change forever. With the internet available for years, the world wide web came out and was able to utilize it to provide easy and (at the time not very instant) access to online content that was formatted in HTML and accessed via the HTTP protocol. -
WiFi is Introduced and Changes Portability of Devices
WiFi was first introduced to the public when a committee called 802.11 was founded. IEEE 802.11 is a set of internet protocols that was created and is still followed today. 802.11AC is the most recent version that utilizes a 5GHz band. It's max data rate is capped at 1Gb/s and provides up to a 1000ft outdoor range. -
Netflix is Created
Currently, Netflix, a name that almost every American knows, has accumulated about 140 million subscribers world wide and continues to grow. From beginnings in 1997, Netflix was originally a DVD rental-by-mail service. They continued this for about 10 years until 2007 when they saw potential in the streaming industry. Now, with it's own in-house shows and movies like Stranger Things, Netflix provides one of the most diverse catalogs of any streaming giant. -
Sharp Corporation Brings the First Camera Phone
Today, mobile photography has become one of the most popular forms of media that is uploaded to social sites. Today, the highest ranked smartphone camera is the Galaxy Note 10+ producing some images that are indistinguishable from DSLR or mirrorless shots. However, the Sharp J-SH04, the first mobile phone with a camera, contrary to the brand's name, was not very sharp. It featured a 0.1 MP CMOS sensor, and all photos had to be put onto a computer.
