    Proto-Hypertext System
It all really started kind of with the idea of the Proto-Hypertext System was a computer like machine that in 1945 Vannevar Bush had described in his essay called "As We May Think" which was published in 'The Atlantic Monthly Article'. The idea behind it was that it would bring files of any kind straight to the user for its use. It would have mechanisms inside transferring and storing everything if the file was in use it would be on a slanted screen and for use at the users fingertips.

Students Ted Nelson & Andries van Dam came together to create the first hypertext editing system. The system nicknamed HES would organize data into two groups. It's main use was text formatting and printing. HES "was used by NASA's Houston Manned Spacecraft Center for documentation on the Apollo space program."(HistoryOfInformation.com). In 1969 HES was stopped and soon replaced with FRESS (File Retrieval and Editing System).
