Magna Carta
Document signed in 1215 establishing limits to the rights of those in power. This essentially was the first draft of the modern "rule of law", a principle that liberalism embodies. It also ensured people would not be imprisoned without reason. -

Renaissance
During the Renaissance, many people became aware of the unfair and improper way the church was ruling. This lead to a development in liberalism in that individuals became more concerned with being properly represented by those in power. This period ran from the 14th century to the 16th century. -

Haudenosaunee Confederacy
Running from the 1500's to the late 1700's, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy established the Great Law of Peace. This provided principles of equality, rights and freedoms and equal power granted to all tribes. This law helped to form a confederacy. -

Reformation
Also known as the Protestant Reformation, this movement began in 1517 and lasted until 1648. In this time, due to religious upheaval, the political, social and economic views of Europe were altered. It drove the idea that the individual is able to contribute to society. -
American Revolution
Lasting from 1765 to 1783, the American Revolution started partially due to the large tax placed on citizens in order for the British to pay back the French. This was considered harsh and combined with the lack of proper representation in Parliament, the Revolution began. It fought for equality of all men and was a huge step for liberalism. -
French Revolution
This was the time period in France of social and political upheaval. It eliminated church court and established equality under the law for all men. In addition it is regarded as the "triumph of liberalism". -
Enlightenment
It was during the Age of Enlightenment that liberalism truly became a movement catching the eyes of Western philosophers. Nations began to truly embrace democracy. -
Industrial Revolution
During this time, the ideas of laissez-faire capitalism were widely recognized and practiced. This meant less government interaction in the economy leading to greater competition and economic freedom. In addition, the Industrial Revolution also caused greater workplace benefits. Lasted from 1800-1900's. -
Changes to Class System
The class system underwent change in order for different classes to be treated equally under the law. Nations adapted to the may principles of liberalism.
