300 BCE
Brush pen
The brush was invented in China around 300 B.C. Together with the inkstone, inkstick and Xuan paper, these four writing implements form the Four Treasures of the Study. -
first quill pen (year from 1601-1700)
Next mention of a pen with inner reservoir comes from 17th century when German inventor Daniel Schwenter invented a pen made from two quills. One quill was placed inside the other; it held the ink and was closed with a cork. Ink left the reservoir through a small hole which led to a nib. -

The first mechanical pencil
The earliest extant example of a mechanical pencil was found aboard the wreckage of HMS Pandora, which sank in 1791. The first patent for a refillable pencil with lead-propelling mechanism was issued to Sampson Mordan and John Isaac Hawkins in Britain in 1822. -

Color pencil
Staedtler, German company owned by Johann Sebastian Staedtler invented colored oil pastel pencil in 1834. Production of colored pencils for art purposes started in early 20th century. First art color pencils were invented and produced in 1924 by Faber-Castell and Caran d'Ache -
Markers
In 1944, Walter J. De Groft patented a "marking pen" that held ink in liquid form in its handle and used a felt tip. This is the patent that will become a “Sharpie” pen in 1964. First modern (and usable) marker pen was Sidney Rosenthal's “Magic Marker” which he invented and started selling in 1953. -

But before Sharpie appeared Sidney Rosenthal invented and started selling in 1953 a “Magic Marker”. The first predecessor of a highlighter was invented by a Japanese inventor Yukio Horie of the Tokyo Stationery Company, who developed in 1962 the first felt-tip pen that used water-based ink. -
Gel pens were invented
Gel Pens were invented by the Sakura Color Products Corp. (Osaka, Japan), who make Gelly Roll pens and was the company that invented gel ink in 1984. -
