    IBM's Simon was the first smartphone released. While it had no browser, it had several other features, including touchscreen, email, fax, and an alarm clock, which was remarkable at the time. It was not hugely successful, due to its $1100 price tag. It also was much larger than modern smartphones, at 8 inches long, and as mentioned above, lacked an internet browser.

Since its release, subsequent models have made many improvements to the IPhone, like enlarging the screen for viewing media, making the phone lighter and thinner for portability, and adding more memory, letting you download more apps.

    The HTC Dream, known as the T-Mobile G1 in the US is notable for being the first Android phone released. It had many new features, like a customizable GUI, integration with Google services, a notifications system, an app store similar to the IPhone's, along with a touch screen and a physical keyboard. It should be noted that the Dream, unlike later Android phones, had no touch screen keyboard. This was changed for convenienience.
