New Neighbors
A new family moves next door. The Bright family sends their kids, Kyra and Olly, over with a cake. Maddy's mom denies the offering because it could potentially be dangerous and doesn't allow them to step foot in their home. -
First Contact
Olly noticed that Maddy is always looking at his window so he decides to write his email on the window. -
Daily Conversing
Madeline and Olly are starting to talk on a daily basis and Olly begins to learn about Maddy's condition. Her mom and nurse begin to notice that there is something suspicious going on because Maddy would stay up in her room more than usual and would decline to play her usual board games with her mom. -
Carla Takes Notice
Maddy is caught by Carla checking her emails and always looking outside which hinted Carla thinking something is going on with the next-door neighbor. -
Maddy Begs Carla To Meet Olly
Madeline begs Carla to let Olly come to their house to meet when her mom isn't home. But, with the risk of Maddy getting sick Olly has to get decontaminated. Finally, after several tries, Carla gives in and lets Olly come over as long as the two of them are separated from each other across the room and do not touch each other. -
First Meet Up
Olly and Maddy meet up in her sunroom. They talk about the technology in the house and how each other's appearances look different than they expected. They get deeper in conversation as Maddy relays her hopes and dreams as well as her curiosity for the outdoors. We learn that Maddy really wants to visit the beach and Olly has to describe to her how it is in real life. -
Messaging and Meeting Up
After one meeting Madeline is starting to develop feelings for Olly. They continue to communicate with each other through emails and meet when Maddy's mom isn't around. She becomes more interested in the outside world and becomes more jealous of Olly's normal life. After a few visits, they begin getting closer and closer together and Olly becomes sorrowful to Maddy as he doesn't want to hurt or get her sick. They later share their first kiss. -
Olly's Father
One day Madeline sees that Olly's father is beating Olly Maddy cannot bear to watch another moment of the fighting so she runs out of the house to try to stop them. Olly tells her to get back inside and that he's alright. -
Carla is Fired
Maddy's mom fires Carla because she has been letting Olly into the house which is a potential danger to Maddy. Both Maddy and Carla are devastated. Carla leaves her with one quote which is to "Be brave. Remember, life is a gift." -
New Nurse
Maddy's mom hires a new nurse who is much stricter and always reminding her to do things. Maddy begins to miss Carla a lot. -
Maddy Plans a Trip to Hawaii
Maddy is sick of feeling locked up and she decides that she wants to risk it all to live life to the fullest even if it's just for view days. She books plane tickets and plans to go to Hawaii with Olly. She leaves and long note to her Mom. Maddy lies to Olly and tells him that she has pills that will keep her healthy and Olly agrees to go with her to Hawaii for a few days. They finally leave to go to Hawaii and Maddy is having many first-time experiences. -
Maddy's Heart Stops
Madeline wakes up in the middle of the night in pain. Olly calls for an ambulance to send her to the hospital. She is rushed to the hospital, where her heart stops and she has to be resuscitated. Her mother arrives in Hawaii and takes her home. -
Return to Normal Life
Maddy returns back home to her normal life. She makes herself forget what had happened. She logs out of her messages on her computer and erases every trace of Olly in her emails. Olly had continued to email her constantly about how having her in his life made him better. She had to stop it because having him in her life made her worse. -
Carla Comes Back
Maddy's mom brings back Carla as her nurse because she thinks it will make Maddy feel better. -
Olly Moves
Olly, his mom, and his sister move to New York to start a new life without abusive Mr. Bright. -
Dr. Melissa Francis
The doctor from Hawaii sends Maddy a personal email about her treatment in Maui. While in Maui they ran a series of tests on Madeline the doctor found that it was highly unlikely that she has the SCID disease. Instead, Maddy suffers from myocarditis, Maddy just has a weak immune system because she lived sterilized for so long. -
Maddy Confronts Her Mom
Maddy confronts her mother with the information and asks if she really suffers from SCID disease. Her mom explains that how could this doctor have figured out all of Maddy's medical history from just a visit. Her mom explains that she has been in a highly-trained, professional doctor for years, so she knows. Maddy shows Carla the email, and Carla seems to have always suspected something was up because Maddy's mom became very overprotective after her son and husband died. -
Maddy Looks For Her Medical Files
Maddy digs through her medical history files. She finds there is no proof of the life she lived. Her mother wakes up and Maddy interrogates her about her whole life. Doctors had confirmed that Maddy wasn't sick, but her mom did not agree so she took it upon herself to protect Maddy at all costs. -
Dr. Chase
Carla and Maddy go visit a SCID specialist. Dr. Chase explains that it's true that she is not sick. He explains that SCID is a very rare disease and that her mother, as a doctor herself, should've known better. Maddy doesn't have any telltale signs of the disease. The reason why she got sick in Maui was that her immune system is very underdeveloped as an infant since she has never experienced the world outside of her house. -
Maddy Starts to Email Olly Again
Maddy begins drafting emails to send to Olly of the whole situation that happened while he was gone in New York. -
Carla Leaves Again
Carla is not needed anymore and so she leaves since Maddy is fine under the control of Dr. Chase. Maddy begs her not to leave and to forgive her mother but there is no reason for Carla to stay. -
The Book Shop in New York
Maddy buys a ticket to New York to visit Olly. Her mom is aware of Maddy's plan. Maddy meets Olly at a bookshop where she hides and places her favorite book The Little Prince that Olly bought her in Hawaii on one of the shelves. He picks up the book and Maddy comes out of hiding. They reconnect and so their love story truly beings.
