The underground railroad was escape tunnels for the slaves to get North. Once they made it to a free state; they were free from their slave owners unless caught and taken back. It was one of the most popular ways to escape North.

Invention of The Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1794. Cotton contained seeds that made it difficult to pick and pull the seeds, and this was what the South mostly used slaves for. This invention allowed the production of cotton to increase.

Tariff of 1828 & Nullification Crisis
The Tariff of 1828 was made to protect industry in the North. In November of 1832, the Nullification Convention met, and declared the Tariff of 1828 unconstitutional within the state of South Carolina. They agreed to this because if they attempted to use force, then there was a chance that South Carolina would have a state succession. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
This was a slavery rebellion. It was known as one of the only slave rebellions in U.S. history. He had hidden for six weeks, but then was caught and trialed. He was hung after his trial.

The Liberator was a newspaper published in Boston, Massachusetts. The Liberator was made by William Lloyd Garrison. In the newspaper, he tried to go up against slavery. -
Wilmot Proviso
Wilmot Proviso was designed to end slavery in the areas of the Mexican War gaining. He had feared any more territories going as a slavery state. Proviso was an administration loyalist until he had presented his proviso. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to prevent the conflict between the North and South. It was introduced by senator, Henry Clay. As part of the compromise, the slave trade with Washington D.C. was abolished.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is Published
Uncle Tom's Cabin was an anti-slavery novel. It was written by Harriet Stowe. It sold over 200,000 copies and was even read by the president himself. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act served the purpose of repealing the Missouri compromise. It allowed the people of Kansas and Nebraska to determine whether or not they wanted to be free or slave states. It was passed by the U.S. in 1854. -

This was an event between Preston Brooks, and Charles Sumner. Charles Sumner was an senate of the U.S. He had given a speech that he was later attacked for by Preston Brooks with a walking cane. -
Dred Scott Decision
It was a decision in which a black man was not able to gain their freedom although they were in a free state. Dred Scott had sued the U.S. for his freedoms. His attempt was unsuccessful.
