    The doors to Japan were closed to prevent foreign ideas from changing Japans culture. However; Japan opened their doors in 1868 and new ideas and influences from other countries came in. Rapidly industrializing Japan and welcoming in thousands of new ideas.
  • Japan Attempts to Overthrow Korea

    Japan Attempts  to Overthrow Korea
    Due to the rapid industrialization of Japan, there was a massive demand for resources; and unfortunately Japan could not produce all of the resouces themselves. A group of pro-Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government becaause of its location and coal and iron. They were unsuccessful.
  • Pro-Japanese Korean Leader Assassinated

    Chinese forces assassinated a pro-Japanese Korean leader. The Chinese forces displayed the body. This sparked outrage from the Japanese people and tension grew quickly between Japan and China.
  • Sino-Japanese War

    Sino-Japanese War
    Japanese and Chinese solders fought against each other for 1 year. Much of the war took place in Korea. The war ended (In 1895) with a victory for Japan. Although Japans military force was smaller; their weapons were much more adavanced.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    Russia wanted to control some of Japan due to their resources. But Russia already had Port Arthur (leased to Russia) Japan was offended and tension grew. A war broke out between the two. Japan eventually won (In September 1905) and became know as the greater power.
  • Nanking Massacre

    Nanking Massacre
    Japan needed resouces; they threatened China so that they could gain political and economic power. But soon Japan wanted to take China over completely. In December 1937 Japanese soldiers forcefully entered Nanking, China; and killed and tortured 260 000 Chinese people.
