The idea of adding territory to the United States created tension before the War, because eventually the new territories would become new states, and if they added anti-slavery votes to Congress, slavery risked death by legislation.the issue of slavery and where it would be permitted began to divide the country. The concept of manifest destiny did not end with the American Civil War. Eventually these tensions would lead to the American Civil War. -
Compromise of 1850
Prevented more territorial expansion of slavery while strengthening the Fugitive Slave Act, a law that is compelled Northerners to seize and return escaped slaves to the South. -

It was part of the Compromise of 1850 that was between the North and the South. It was to catch runaway slaves. It was also called the "Bloodhound Law." -
Popular Sovereignty in Territories
The border between Kansas and Missouri became a hotbed of violence. In 1854, Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas, hoped to once again employ the principles of popular sovereignty in order to address the slavery debate, this time in the Kansas and Nebraska territories. -

Drew Scoot was a slave in missouri originally from illonois returning to missouri he sued them for not giving him his freedom. Which both states had banned slavery. His argument was that since he lived in a free sate and he was considered a free man, lead to the civil war because african americans didn't have civil rights like white men. -

Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 despite not being included on many Southern ballots. Republican, his party’s anti-slavery outlook fear into many Southerners. -
John Brown's raid and Nat Turner
Brown was an abolitionist who led the raid into Virginia. Was against the federal armory and tried to end slavery. Brown wanted to create a uprising of slaves by seizing a mountain fortress as him and his followers went on this raid.Nat turners raid was the largest save rebellion, plan was to go to each plantation and kill all the whites. This contributed more towards the secession of the south -
