Women's Christian Temperance Union Founded

Samuel Gompers founds the American Federation of Labor
This is a union made up of skilled workers. The AFL was one of the many labor unions that sprang up in the 1800s as workers fought to improve wages and working conditions in factories and business across the US. The 8 hour working day was fought for to improve wages and ended child labor. -
Homestead strike
this took place in 1892 when iron and steel workers struck the Carnegie Steel Company in Homestaed,PA. they hired 300 Pinkerton detectives to protect the plant and the people working. there was an armed battle between the workers and the detectives, several men died or were wounded.the governor called the state militia and ended the strike. -
American Tobacco V. US goes to Supreme Court
the US sued the American Tobacco Company in 1911 for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. The first cause brought against a tobacco company. found violate from the Supreme Court and they broke up in major companeis. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
A fire broke out in the factory in New York City resulting in the death of 146 workers who were unable to escape from the upper floors. The fire spread quickly because of all the flammable materials. the women were unable to escape because the doors had been locked to prevent workers from stealing materials and the fire ladders were not long enough for them to reach the escape door. the ILGWU began to improve conditions for the industry which led to new safely regulations.
