Harry S. Truman is elected President
President Truman was in office from 1945 till 1953, as moving up from vice president from Roosevelt he was unaware of military matters, peace negotiations, and atomic bombs. He had to meet Stalin and Churchill for the first time, which he then feared Soviet agression. His election of president is important because of the things he brought into the war and that was focused on such as NATO, Truman Doctrine, Berlin Airlift, and Marshall Plan. -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was a policy created by President Truman stating that there would be help provided to the countries that felt they were being threatened by communism and totalitarian. Those countires would recieve economic and military aid. The Truman Doctrine is significant to the Cold War because it allowed the United States to help stabilize countries. It gave the countries a feel of security. The Truman Doctrine brought up the Red Scare and it also showed the policy of containment. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was a program proposed by George Marshall, which the US supplied economic aid to European nationsto help rebuild them after WW2. In February, Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia and took over the country. This was important because it showed Congress the need for strong goverments and then approved the plan. -
Creation of NATO
NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that brought 12 nations together for defense against Soviet agression. This treaty was created by Harry S. Truman. The significance of the creation of NATO is that it tried to end war between Bonsina-Herzegovina and provided military alliance. -
Korean War
The Korean War was known as the first military action of the Cold War. This was where North Korean's Army traveled aross the 38th parallel to unify the other side with the northern government and fought with South Korean. The importance to this event that it caused more problems during the Cold War between communism and capitalism. Which caused civil conflicts and a lot of deaths. -
Dwight D. Eisenhower elected president
Before becoming president he was a soldier himself. While president he worked very hard to try to release the tensions that developed in the Cold War. Importance from the Cold War and this president was that he ended three years of fighting with Korea with an agreement. He also brought in stronger nuclear strength. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a treaty of defense and military aid signed my European countries. This allowed the Soviet Union to have powers over their allies. The importance of this event to the Cold War is that the Warsaw pact withdrew support from the government from treaty. -
Vietnam War
This war started in 1955 and ended April 30, 1975 this was between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. During this war the United States, South Korea, and other countries helped aided this war. This war was to unify Vietnam to take it over by a communist goverment and the United States. And to try to prevent Vietnam by being spreaded with communism. The importance of this event is that South Vietnam surrenered to North Vietnam and was a communist country, known as Sociolist Republic of Vietnam. -
U.S beings providing economic Aid to South Vietnam
During 1961 South Vietnam signed a military and economic aid treaty with the U.S. This was important becaue it brought South Vietnam and United States together against Viet cong and North Vietnamese forces. -
John F. Kennedy elected President
Kennedy was president from January 20, 1961 through November 22, 1963. His impacted on the Cold War was that he spent a lot on nuclear missiles that set off an arms race. Which resulted in losing America's nuclear superiority. -
Peace Corps is Established
Peace Corps was an orgnaization that controlled by the US government that sent trained men and women to volunteer in other developing countries. The importance of this was that during the Cold War Kennedy wanted to involve Americans in more global democracy, peace, development, and freedom just like the Soviet Union did for their people. -
Bay of Pigs
This was taken place by the Caribbean Sea in south western Cuba. Where there was an attempt invasion on Cuba by anti-castro forces. The singificance to this event was to stop communism from coming into the United States but the invasion failed which led up to the Cuban Missile Crisis. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Berlin Wall was starting to be built over night by many workers. This caused divison between East and West Berliner's. The wall caused problems between East and West Berliner's not being able to see one another, jobs, freedom, and East Berliners were not free to go where they pleased. This was important because it showed divison and power during the Cold War. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union on nuclear-armed Soviet missles on Cuba. This caused Kennedy to make sure that the United States was prepared with military force. This event was important because no harm was forced once the United States agreed to not invade Cuba by the Soviet Leader. -
Six-Day War
The Six Day War was between Arabs and Israelis, the war lasted five days long. The Israelis defended the war with military effort but in the end the war was a military disaster for Arabs. This was important because Israel was a powerful country now during the war now. -
Thurgood Marshall becomes First African American Justice on Supreme Court
Thurgood Marshall was on supreme court for 24 years until health issues. He studied at Howard University Law School, this is an important event because it shows how "blacks" overcame Civil Rights and predjuice against the "whites". He was a man that proceeded an education and didn't let the color of his skin stop him from making a difference in history. -
Martin Luther KingJunior and Robert Kennedy are Assassinated
This event in time was very important because these two people were leaders. Martin Luther King helped uplift the rights to blacks and Kennedy also fought for civil rights and was a plotician. This impacted the Cold war because these were two well known people that had a dramtic effect on the civil rights. -
Richard M. Nixon is Elected President
Becoming president he wanted to bring detente with the Soviet Union and China in 1972 and to bring peace in Vietnam which was hard to overcome. Nixon was president until May of 1972. -
Detente
Detente is the easing of tensions between nations, which occured during 1970's. This was important during the Cold War because it was hoped for the United States and the Soviet Union to imporve their realtionship with one another. -
Strategic Arms Limitation Talks
The United States and the Soviet Union made an agreement on the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks and negotiated to put limits on some of their central arms. The importance of this is that further along the line in 1993, Russia and the United States agreed on START 11. -
Iran Frees United States Hostages
In other words this was known as the Iran Hostage Crisis. A total of 444 days about 52- 66 Americans were held hostage until January 20, 1981. The importance of this is the friction it causes between the United States and Iran. Also causing president Carter to apply economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran. -
Ronald Reagan is Elected
Becoming present during the period of the Cold War he fought through may difficult taks. Such as pursing freedom and helping the economy. By tax reduction and decreasing interest rate. He believed in trational values, he sure left a political legacy such as the welfare bill and reform of socila security. -
Equal Rights Amendement Fails to win Ratification
The fail caused a lot of problems until December of 1923 when Equal Rights ammendent was propsed by Alice Paul. She believed that women had every single right as a man did. Not until 1972 ERA was sent for ratification by a senate. This was important becasue it was about rights "Civil Rights" everyone should be equal. -
Ronald and Soviet leader Mikhail sign Intermediate Range Nuclear Force Treaty
This was an agreement between Ronald and Mikhail about the limitation to to intermediate and short-range missiles from Europe. This was important becaue two strong powers during Cold War,the United States and soviet Union, were working together. -
Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force Treaty
This treaty was an arrangement between the United States and the Soviet Union. It eliminated nuclear and conventioanl ground launch and cruise missiles from Europe. This was important because it was the first arms control agreement between two nations. -
George Bush Elected President
During the Cold War he entered his presidency during the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. He ordered a lot of military operations and did the "no new Taxes". -
German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was created to stop East Berliner's from crossing into the Western side. This divided the demoracy and communism during the Cold War. The wall came down November 9, 1980 because the East German Communist leaders believed there needed to be a change. The importance of this event caused East and West to become one state on October 3,1990. -
Germans dismantle the Berlin Wall
The wall that isolated and destroyed people lives finally came to the ground. East Germans were required to destroy the wall allowing East and West Berliner's freedom back. This was important because it was a huge symbol during the Cold War and it illustrated power, communism, captilism, and lack of freedom to the people. -
Collapse of Soviet Union
The collapse of the soveit union made the country split into fifteen sepearate countries. This was important because it ended the cold war and it also caused a reformation of economic, political, military alliances.
