North Vietnam who were supported by communists and South Vietnam who was supported by the U.S. the reason of the war was to join both North and South Vietnam under a communist government. The U.S joined the war to prevent communism from taking over South Vietnam. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
A pact signed by the Soviet Union and its other seven countries that were under its rule. The treaty says that they need to come and aid any country that has been attacked by another force. The treaty was signed in Warsaw, hence its name. -
Soviet launch Sputnik
This was the first artificial earth satellite. It could be seen all around earth and its radio pulses were detectable. This successful launch began the space age. -
Bay of Pigs
1,400 Cubans that had left when Fidel Castro came into power were trained by Americans to invade Cuba and get Castro out of power. But they were largely outnumbered by Castro’s troops. After about 24 hours of fighting they surrendered and the invasion failed tremendously. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
The wall split West and East Berlin in two and was over 100 miles long. At first it was made of concrete posts and barbed wires and was also guarded. East Germany was under communist control and the purpose of the wall was to keep out Westerns but it was also to keep the people of East Berlin in. -

A 13-day military standoff between the U.S and Cuba because of the nuclear-armed Soviet missiles that were installed just 90 miles off of U.S shores. In conclusion the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev's offered to remove the missiles if the U.S agreed not to invade Cuba. -

Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, American astronauts were the first men to ever step foot on the moon. And landed on the moon in Apollo 11. -

German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
The German Democratic Republic (East Gemany) joined the Federal Republic of Germany(West Germany). Berlin became one city again. The barrier was finally opened after 28 years and was celebrated around the world. This was called “The Turning Point.” And when it was finished it is now known as the German unity. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
The Soviet president resigned on the 25th, on the same day the Soviet flag was taken down and in its place was the Russian flag. And the Soviet Union split into 15 different countries.
