The United States CIA trained paramilitary groups to overthrow the Soviet allied leftist government of Cuba. These troops were defeated and publically interrogated before being sent back to the US. -
Construction of the Berlin Wall
A wall was constructed by Eastern German forces (USSR backed) to prevent emigration. They claimed it was to protect agianst facists in west Berlin. Around 600 people died attempting to escape East Germany ove the wall. -

Cuba became backed by the Soviet Union and threatened missile attacks from a closer point. -

Israel launches suprise bombing runs on Egypt. Israel successfully took the gaza strip and sanai peninsula from Egypt and won a victory at a key time. -
The USA Sends First Man to the Moon
American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins take the first ever manned space flight to the moon. Aldrin and Armstrong both spend time on the moon's surface and bring back material for study. -

A USA team made up of amateur hockey players won a late round match against the soviet union, who had won nearly every tournament since 1954. -
The Destruction of the Berlin Wall
East German government passed a law allowing East Germans back into West Germany. Over the following months German Reunification began and the most of the wall was brought down by citizens and goverment industrial equipment. -
Soviet Union Invades Afghanistan
A nine year conflict between the Red Army and the Mujahadeen, funded and trained by the United States in order to stop the spread of ommunism to Afghanistan. -

Mikhail Gorbachev began a liberalization of the soviet union which lead to many nationalist movements and ethnic disputes eventually coming to the dissolution of the one-party state. -
Warsaw Pact
A mutual defense treaty between the communist countries of eastern europe. This treaty was largely assembled to combat NATO. -
Korean War
A conflict between Communist, China backed North Korea and Nationalist, US backed South Korea. The US' main objectives were to stop the spread of Communism and reunite the two Koreas.
