    Truman Doctrine
    A policy set by President Truman that the U.S. should provide military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey in order to prevent those countries from falling to the Soviet Union as well.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    An American formed program designed to aid foreign war-torn nations by lending such countries money. The Soviets and their satellite nations refused the loans.
  • Creation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Association)

    Creation of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Association)
    The North American Treaty Association was originally created with only 12 countries; Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the United States. It was formed as a military defense against any possible Soviet Union invasions or aggression.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    Communist North Korea crosses the 38th Parallel to invade non-communist South Korea. North Korea quickly overpowered the South with their Soviet tanks, but U.S. and UN interfered with U.S. forces commanded by General Douglas MacArthur. Within the course of the war South Korea was freed from North and MacArthur chased North Korea past the 38th Parallel. But, North Korea feared the the U.S would take a North Korean base. Secretly the People’s Republic of China began sending troops to help fight.

    Rosenberg Spy Case
    The Rosenberg couple were the first of many people put on trial for suspision of espionage. The couple was being acussed of passing information about the Atomic Bomb over to the Soviet Union. Acusations were proven to be true after U.S. had found out that Julius was a recruter for Soviet Union and his wife and him were put to death. Numberous others had been convicted throughout this case ,but not put to death, including Julius' brother who served a 15 year sentence.
  • Creation of Warsaw Pact

    Creation of Warsaw Pact
    As a response to NATO, which Soviets found as a threat, the Warsaw Pact was associated with the Soviet Union and its seven satellite countries; Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. The Warsaw Pact was proposed for the same purposes as NATO, military backup.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    This war was seen as yet another direct war between the U.S. and Soviet Union during Cold War Era; the Vietnam War started when North Vietnam's communist leader Ho Chi Minh introduces Guerilla Campaign and launches an attack on the South. This war lasting for roughly 20 years ended with the victory of communist government taking power in South Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos while U.S. forces drew back.
  • Bay of Pigs

    Bay of Pigs
    A Nationalist in Cuba, Fidel Castro, had overthrown General Fulgencio Batista (President of Cuba, who American had supported) in Havana. For two year America had attempted to overthrow Castro through agencies like the CIA and U.S. State Department. April of 1961 Americans had trained Cuban soldiers to revolt against the government. Within 24 hours they had surrendered due to the fact that they had become outnumbered.
  • Berlin Wall Rises

    Berlin Wall Rises
    After World War II allied powers took control of Germany and split it into two parts (west and east). West was shared between France, the U.S. and Great Britain (Federal republic of Germany) and East (the German Democratic Republic) was left to Soviet Union. Living conditions became oppressive for those under the shadow of a communist government and unbearable. Nearly 2.5 million by '61, so to keep its citizens East Germany builds a wall around it's boarders to keep more from leaving.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    With the consent of Cuba, through agreements of protection from the U.S., the Soviet Union secretly began to build missile bases in Cuba facing the U.S. On the 16th Kennedy was sent the pictures of the bases and warned. Kennedy considered any attack from Cuba would be a direct attack from the Soviet Union. October 26 the Soviet Union's Nikita Khrushchev sent a letter to Kennedy promising to dismantle the bases if U.S. assured them they wouldn't invade Cuba. On the 28th the bases were down.
  • Six Day War

    Six Day War
    Israel becomes a country in 1948 and tensions begin to grow between the neighboring countries. Israel began launching bombs against Egypt after such high tensions and Egyptian raid of Israel. The Soviet Union had sided with Arabs, while The U.S. sided with Israel. Israel gains control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. After six days Israel had won the war.

    With upsets in the last defeat by Soviet Union in basketball, the tension as pressure grew higher as the Soviets faced the United States in the 1980 Olympic Hockey game. Americans win by one, final score 4 to 3. We had beat Communism again.

  • German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall

    German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
    28 years later the wall was set to fall just as quick as it rose. Communisms grip was weakening on countries such as; Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. On November 9 east Germany's government official (Günter Schabowski) announced a relocation of the boarder lines. People crowded from both sides of the wall anticipating the reunion of the two sides as the walls came down, and on October 3 of 1990 Germany was once again whole (east and west were no more).
  • Fall of Soviet Union

    Fall of Soviet Union
    Last leader of Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, resigns and Soviet flag is lowered later that day. Soviet Union began to break apart, resulting in 15 independent coutries, including Russia.
