Paul Revere and other riders sounded the alarm. Soon the colonies' militiamen or minutemen were ready to intercept the British troops. The confrontation at Lexington started off the fighting and the British troops retreated under heavy colonist fire. -

Reenactment of The Battle of Bunker Hill.General Howe led British troops to capture Bunker Hill, protected by General Prescott. Prescott's famous saying, "Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes," was said here. The colonists saited until the British were about 40 yards away before they fired, instantly taking out 100 British troops. This was ultimately a victory for the British, but they suffrered many casualties, and the colonists much less. -

Saratoga, the turning point.General Burgoyne led 8,000 troops and combined forces with General Howe along the Hudson River. Burgoyne's troops were stationed near Saratoga while the larger patriot army was stationed four miles away by General Gates. British troops marched out to engage the patriots, but failed to break their lines, Burgoyne's troops retreated. This was known as the first Battle of Saratoga. The patriots under Washington's lead suffered many defeats. During the winter, hundreds of the 11,000 troops stationed there died to disease. The deaths sustained by diseases was why Valley Forge was considered a low point. -
Last-Yorktown #Conclusion
The battle of Yorktown in documentary form.General Washington, with 17,000 troops began the march against General Cornwallis and his army of 9,000 in Yorktown, Virginia. Cornwallis' base was stationed at Chesapeake Bay where he could easily escape, so 5,000 troops blocked his excape by land and the French naval fleet blocked his escape by sea. After three straight weeks of bombardment, Cornwallis surrendered on October 17, 1781. -
