Events leading up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    (couldnt find the date) The great Northern war lasted from 1700-1721. It included at least a dozen different countries including Japan, Korea and Russia. The Great Northern War expanded throughout asia and europe and involved many different areas.
  • Decembrist revolt

    Decembrist revolt
    Military officials led a revolt against Nicholas I. The officers were defeated and this caused Nicholas to make sure that the revolt didnt spread any more througout Russia. During a ceremony on Dec. 14th, 3,000 men began an open revolt against the Czar. The czar tried to give a peace talk with the rebels but when they didnt listen, the czar had no choice but for his military to open fire. The aftermath of the revolt is what came to be called the Decembrist revolt.
  • Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    Czar Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    in 1861, Alexander II freed the serfs. The freed serfs gained few political rights but the main reason they were freed was so that they could keep their land and belongings but they had to pay heavy taxes in order to keep those things. Because of this, many peasants fell into debt and this added onto Russias poverty levels. (couldn't find the date)
  • The assassination of Alexander II

    The assassination of Alexander II
    On March 13th 1881, Czar Alexander II was assassinated. A bomb had been thrown at him as he was walking the streets and his legs were shattered. He eventually bled to death in the middle of the streets.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    Russo-Japanese War
    Japan took over the Liaotang penninsula from China but Russia forced Japan to return the penninsula. Later, Russia took over the pennisula and Japan objected to this. Japan broke off all its ties with Russia and a few days later, entered wart with them.
  • The revolution of 1905

    The revolution of 1905
    The revolution of 1905 started off as a peaceful protest with a petition stating they wanted the Czar to help them. The large crowd was stopped by officers who, being nervous about facing such a large crowd, starter to shoot at the protesters.
  • The march revolution

    During the March revolution, a man named Rasputin was murdered and the rulers of Russia were out of the country. This left people with the perfect oppertunity to over throw the Czar and kick him out of the throne. The government forced Nicholas out of the throne because they felt that a Czar caused too many problems.
  • Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Throne

    Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Throne
    Due to a riot in March of 1917, the government forced Nicholas and his family out of the throne for they felt that Russia did not need a Czar to control it. The Government felt that without a ruler, the country would do better at keeping control of itself. When it says Abdicate, it means they were forced to leave. The Czar did not want to leave but he was forced to. The Czar and his family were later murdered while they thought they were getting their family picture taken.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Protests went on for the the rights to vote and everyone was shot at. Its said that 2000 people died. The riot was posed for 2 rights. Public speech and voting. As the riot was taking place, the czar ordered the officers to open fire at the rioters. Many people died and it has since been known as bloody sunday.
