Events leading up to the Declaration of Independence

  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan
    The Albany Plan was a plan to create a united government for the 13 colonies. It was suggested by Ben Franklin and a delegate from Pennsylvania. It lead to the Declaration of Independence by forming a whole united government.
  • American Revolution

    The American Revolution was the war between the Americans and the British which had the Americans under British rule. This lead to the Declaration of Independence because it was the war that got them their independence or freedom.
  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was a double taxation that the British put on all paper products used in the colony. It was a very unfair thing to do as some people were paying double taxes for items. It lead to the Declaration of Independence by creating conflict between the British and the Americans.

    The Boston Massacre was a revolt on the American colonist for the Boston Tea Party. The British soldiers shot at the colonist in order to put fear into them and also give a punishment. This lead to the Declaration of Independence by creating more conflict between the colonist and British rule.

    A protest by the colonists on Boston against the tea tax that the British government put on the colonists. This made people want to stand up for their rights and fight back. It lead to the Declaration of Independence because it was the first time that the people under British rule stood up and fought back.

    The Intolerable Acts were laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 after the Boston Tea Party. The laws were for people to be punished for participating in the Boston Tea Party. This lead to the Declaration of Independence by creating even more conflict between the people and the British rule.

    The First Continental Congress closed the port of Boston off to Britain, Boycotted British goods. The delegates sent a declaration of rights, protesting Britain's colonial policies. This lead to the Declaration of Independence by leading to the Second Continental Congress which was the first form of government.

    This Battle of Lexington and Concord was the start of the American Revolutionary War. The British army set out to capture Sam Adams and John Hancock in Lexington and they set out to destroy the Americans weapon supply. This lead to the Declaration of Independence by being the first battle of the war that gave the people of the colonies freedom.

    The Second Continental Congress was a convention of Delegates from the 13 colonies formed to create our first government. It lead to the Declaration of Independence by being the first form of government and gave the nation a start of a unified country.

    The Declaration of Independence is a written document that gave America their independence. It was written by John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Rodger Sherman. It was the final thing they needed to finally earn their independence over British rule.
