Events leading up to Declaration of Independence

  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan
    The Albany plan was a plan to unify the 13 colonies under one government. This plan was one of the many plans to create a government and free themselves from British rule. This plan was proposed by Benjamin Franklin.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The stamp act was an Act of the Parliament of Great Britain that forced a tax upon the 13 colonies that required that all printed materials such as newspapers, legal, and commercial documents. This eventually led to a major chaos and confusion in the colonies, and led to the Declaration of Independence.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre occurred in Boston as the name suggest. British officers were being harassed by a mob. After person yelled fire a officer fired his gun which caused his fellow officers to fire as well. After this incident the officers were taken to court, six of which were acquitted. This event was one of the beginning events of the Revolutionary War which helped fuel the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

    The Boston Tea Party was a act of protest on the tax on tea performed by the Sons of Liberty. This act occurred in Boston. This single act made the British furious at the 13 colonies and what they had done. This eventually lead to the Declaration of Independence.

    The intolerable acts were laws passed by the British after the Boston Tea Party. The law was passed to punish to the the people of Massachusetts. This of course only angered the people of Massachusetts and the 13 colonies which pushed forward the idea of a new government.

    This was the first battle of the American Revolutionary war. Chaos erupted in the colonies with the Americans and the British over numerous reasons. The battles were fought in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Menotomy, and Cambridge. This started the war, the war that led to the Declaration of Independence.

    This was during the first two years of President George Washington's presidency. They met at Federal Hall in New York City. During this time twelve articles of amendment to the Constitution were passed by this Congress and sent to the states for ratification.

    Like the 1st congress, the 2nd congress took place during George Washington's presidency (specifically the 3rd and 4th) The distributions of seats in the House of Representatives was based on Article I, Section 2, Clause 3 of the United States Constitution.
