Missouri Compromise
To keep the Senate equal, Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. 36-30 was the line used to decide future states. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The act required people to catch escaped slaves, and resulted in more African Americans being sent South. -

The compromise did many things like make California a free state and settle the borders between Texas and Mexico. -

Harriet Beecher Stowe became a leader in the north after righting a book about the evils of slavery. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The act split the Louisiana territory into two, and caused arguments between the North and South who wanted to assert their ideals. -
John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry
A small group raided an arsenal to help slaves. Most were killed but their leader John Brown became a symbol. -
South Carolina secedes
Due to a very anti-slavery president being elected, the very pro-slavery state, South Carolina, seceded from the US. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln was elected despite Southern resistance due to him being anti-slavery. -
Dred Scott case
Dred Scott was given to his owner's brother when his owner died. He tried to protest because he was now in a free state but the Supreme Court sided against him.
