Major Battles in the Civil War

  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter was the first Confederate attack against the Union. The Union still had an island in South Carolina, the first state to secede, and President Lincoln was supporting the island. This attack started the Civil War.

  • Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack/ Battle of Hampton Road

    The Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack was fought near Hampton Road, Virginia. This battle changed the way the Civil War was fought because now they depended on ironclad ships, rather than all-out army attacks and rifles.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh was fought between General Grant of the Union and General Johnston of the Union and was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War with over 23,000 casualties. The Union won this battle, and with it the western part of Tennessee.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    The Battle of New Orleans was fought in New Orleans, and was a Union victory. This battle was fought by Farragut of the Union, and this win gave the Union entire control of the Mississippi River.
  • Battle of Richmond

    The Battle of Richmond was fought between General McClellan of the Union and General Lee of the Confederates. The Confederates won the battle.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in the Civil War fought with General McClellan, of the Union, and General Lee, of the Confederates. It took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland. General Lee wanted to capture the capital of the Union, but General McClellan found his battle plan and was able to win, but he did not chase the fleeing General McClellan, and therefore was fired.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought by General Burnside of the Union and General Lee of the Confederates. General Burnside was going to attack Richmond, the Confederate capital, but General Lee set up a blockade, and therefore won the battle.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    The Battle of Chancellorsville was against General Hooker of the Union and General Grant and General Jackson of the Confederates. It was a costly battle and victory for the Confederates, who successfully kept the Union forces back, and is regarding as General Grant's greatest win.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    The Battle of Vicksburg was fought in Mississippi. It was fought between Grant of the Union and Lee of the Confederates, and this city was one of the last cities in Mississippi still under Confederate rule. The Union won the battle.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was between General Lee of the Confederates and General Meade of the Union. The Union won and stopped General Lee's advancement into Union territory.
  • Battle of Appomattox Courthouse

    The Battle of Appomattox Courthouse was the last battle fought by General Lee's army, and was a surrender to the Union army led by General Grant. This was the loss of the largest army under the Confederates, and basically meant that the Union won.
