Events leading to the Civil war

  • Wilimot Proviso

    The Wilimot Proviso occurred on February 1st, 1847. The purpose of the proviso was to keep slavery from expanding. The proviso never went into effect.
  • Compromise of 1850

    In 1850 they tried to settle the issue of slavery between the north and the south states.
  • Abraham Lincoln was elected as president

    He lost the debate to end slavery, but he brought attention to the republican party. He ran against Douglas again, but this time he won. Some states wanted to secede from the United States because now there was a republican president. Just five days after the American Civil War ended Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at the Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is first published on march 20, 1852. It was an anti slavery book about African Americans, some say it "helped lay the ground way for the Civil war."
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    The Kansas - Nebraska Act allowed for Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they wanted to be a slave state or not. Nebraska decided not to be a slave state. People rushed into Kansas to affect the vote which led to anti slavery leader John Brown to “take matters into his own hands” which ended in an uproar of violence.
  • John Brown's Massacre at Pottawatomie Creek

    John Brown's Massacre at Pottawatomie Creek took place on the 24 of may 1856 to the 25. This guy decided to attack a slavery town and brutally killed people. He fled and became a fugitive. He caused a lot of chaos, as people became violent. In just five years the whole state became a bloodbath.
  • John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry, Virginia on May 25, 1856, John Brown raided Harper's ferry in Virginia, his sons were involved and two of them were killed. Brown was hurt and tried for treason and murder and was found guilty
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott Decision on march 6, 1857 ruled that Dred Scott who was a slave who resided wanted his freedom, he was not granted. They declared that all African Americans were not citizens.
  • Lincoln - Douglas Debate

    Lincoln - Douglas Debate "A House Divided Against itself can not stand." said in 1858, he was talking about how they can't agree on slavery because "A house (referring to The United States) against itself can not stand." This was part of a political campaign in Illinois.

    South Carolina Secedes from the United States. Union South Carolina succeeded from the United States because they did not agree with the House of representatives. This would eventually lead to the American civil war. 1860

    Confederate States of America are formed founded in 1861, the C.S.A was an organized country in North America for five years. The C.S.A was a collection of eleven states that seceded from The United States.
  • Confederate Troops Fire at Fort Sumter

    Confederate Troops Fire at Fort Sumter, South Carolina It was the first shot fired in the American Civil war. They couldn’t use the big cannons so they used the small ones. They shot at each other for 33 hours before they gave up. No one was killed in the 33 hour fight. 1861
