Kansas Nebraska Act
An act passed stating that kansas and nebraska could vote for whether or not those states could have slavery. -
Bleeding Kansas
Riots and fights all over Kansas when the Kansas Nebraska Act was passed. Later became the rallying cry for the Republican Party. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott is a free slave that went to a slave state. Because of the Fugitive Slave Act, Dred Scott was ruled a slave. He sued for his freedom and the Supreme Court ruled that all blacks were not citizens and could not sue. Eventually, his freedom was bought. -
Lincoln-Douglass Debates
Lincoln and Douglass were running for senator of Illinois. We call their debates, Lincoln-Douglass debates. Lincoln said slavery was wrong but legal. Douglass won, but Lincoln became nationally famous. -
Harper's Ferry
John Brown seized the federal arsenal to stir up a slave revolt in Virginia and end slavery. Brown became a martyr in the cause of slavery. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln won the presidential election in 1860 mainly because the north had a higher population (at the time, voters decided who to vote for by which section of the country they lived in). Lincoln promised to keep slavery from spreading to the new territories. Because of Lincoln's election, the south seceded. -
Fort Sumter
First shots of the Civil War. Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter and the South thought that meant war.
