    The purpose of it was to save money. Britain kept about 10,000 soldiers.The act required colonists to quarter or house British troops and provide them with food and supplys,the colonists protested angrily protested and complained that they were violating there rights.

    Britain wanted to avoid further wars with native Americans in the frontier.Therefore the British government ordered the proclamation of 1763.It banned colonial settlements west of a line drawn along the Appalachian mountains called the mason-Dixon line so settlers were told that they had to move east of that line.the proclamation of 1763 angered colonists.The proclamation was widely ignored an proved impossible for the British to enforce.

    The British were mad so they passed four laws. The first one closed the port of Boston,the second one abolished the upper house of Massachusetts and cut power to town meetings and any one who murder had to go to England. Americans reacted by try to help Boston by giving them supplies.The congress demanded the repeal of the intolerable act and declared that the colonies had the right to tax and govern themselves and if demands were not met by May they will vote again.

  • First Continental Congress

    The British government had no intentions of meeting the colonists demands while colonists began to arm and form new militia units called the minutemen. General Thomas Gage sent 700 troops to seize the arms and capture some important colonial leaders. Paul Revere and William Dawes rode through the night to warn the minutemen that the British were coming. Then when the troops arrived in Concord 400 minutemen fought the British killing three of them as the British retreated towards Boston.
  • Battles of Lexington and concord

    Five miles from Concord in as town of Lexington about 77 minutemen were waiting when the British arrived the British commander ordered the minutemen to go home and they refused to. Then, a larger battle took place near Concord this time 400 men fought the British killing 3 of them. As British retreated for Boston about 4,000 Americans fired like the Indians fight from behind things. Almost 300 British soldiers had been killed or wounded.

    Battle of Fort Ticonderoga

    Fort Ticonderoga was important for two reasons. It controlled the route in between Fort Ticonderoga and Canada. It also held valuable weapons especially cannons. The Americans needed cannons to manage the British's power. The green mountain boys took the fort and seized several dozen cannons which were soon moved to Boston where George Washington drove the British back to England.

    As the crisis with Britain deepened ,the second contain congress came together in Philadelphia. The congress at first was divided about what what to do.A group of delegates from New England wanted to declare independence. A more modern group from the middle colonies favored less drastic actions. The congress chose George Washington as the commander of the newly formed continental Army. H e had military experience and he was well respected. The congress paid for his Army by printing paper money.

    Olive Branch Petition

    Two resolutions passed in July showed the uncertainty of congress. The first resolution was called the olive branch petition which was sent to King George. The petition stated that the colonists were loyal to the king. It asks Britain to stop fighting so that all disputes between the colonists and Britain could be solved peacefully. The next day congress passed a stronger statement called the declaration of causes and necessities of taking up arms. The effort to make peace between them failed.

    Battle of Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill

    British General William Howe decided to attack straight up the mountain but,the american commander knew his soldiers did not have much ammo so they waited until the British were 150 feet away until firing. The American's won twice but on the third time the British went up the hill and the American's ran out of ammo killing about 100,000 and the British killed only about 400. Washington showed up and knew he had to take charge and had to build a regular and strong army and drove the British away.

    The British withdraw from Boston

    In March Washington placed the cannons high ground overlooking Boston and the British could no longer defend the city so,they withdrew from Boston by sea and never returned. Washington knew the war was not over. British still held the most advantages because they held the most powerful army in the world.

    Invasion of Quebec

    While Washington was training one army two other army's moved north in to Canada. One led by Richard Montgomery and the other one by Benedict Arnold. Benedict Arnold's troops were forced to boil candles,shoe leather and bark for candles for food. The American;s attacked during a severe snowstorm. Montgomery was killed and Arnold was wounded.The Canadians won this battle.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Britain recognized the independence of the united states.The boundaries of the new nations were set at the Atlantic on the east,Canada on the north,the Mississippi river on the west and Florida on the south. Florida was returned to Spain the united states agreed to "earnestly recommended" that the states restore rights and property taken from loyalist during the war.Then congress approved the treaty the war was officially over.
