Events leading to the American civil war

  • The compromise of 1850 including the fugitive slave act

The Fugitive Slave Act was amended, the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished, California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah. The men that created it was Henry Clay, Stephen A. Douglas, and Millard Fillmore to handle slavery in recently acquired territories from the Mexican–American War. This led to the civil war because more slave things are being controlled and soon people will get angry and try to fight with the other side.
  • Kansas-Nebraska act in 1854

Was a territorial organic act that created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. It was drafted by Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas and signed by president Franklin Pierce. Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent civil confrontations in Kansas Territory, people were doing electoral fraud, raids, assaults, and murders carried out. There were 3 main groups during the conflict, pro-slavery, Free-Staters and abolitionists. The reason why they are fighting in Kansas is to know if Kansas would be a slave state or a free state. This led to the civil war because it would put the balance of power uneven which would lead to conflict later on.
  • Preston Brooks vs Charles Sumner 1856

Preston Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto Sumner's head repeatedly while Sumner tried to block and ended with Sumner bleeding a lot and get carried away while Brooks walked away. The reason why Brooks did this in the senate chamber was because Sumner mocks Andrew Butler in his speech, “ Crime Against Kansas” because he thinks he is one of the culprits in this crime and Brooks is Andrew’s kinsman so he had to defend him. This will lead to the civil war because there will be more debates.
  • Dred Scott vs Sandford

This case involves Dred Scott, an enslaved black man suing for his freedom and claimed that because he had been taken into "free" U.S. territory, he had automatically been freed and was legally no longer a slave. But the Supreme Court said that the Constitution did not extend American citizenship to African people and thus they can’t enjoy the privileges of the Constitution. This leads to the civil war because anti slavery people will get mad at this and will argue which will lead to fighting.

  • John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry

John Brown, a staunch abolitionist, and a group of his supporters left their farmhouse hide-out en route to Harpers Ferry. They intend to initiate a slave revolt in Southern states by taking over the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. But John Brown’s party was defeated by a company of U.S. Marines, led by First Lieutenant Israel Greene. This will lead to the civil war because the south will feel threaten and get angry at the people trying to get rid of there slaves.
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

The presidential election of 1860 was the 19th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 6, 1860. In a four-way contest. Lincoln won a national popular plurality and won other votes too. Lincoln's election thus served as the main catalyst of the states that would become the Confederacy seceding from the Union. This leads to the civil war because the south don’t want to be part of the union no more because a northern person as president will try to get rid of there slaves.
