Comparing School magazines
This was my first step in looking at magazines. For our preliminary task we had to look at school magazines and I started off by comparing existing publications and their elements. -
Creating my front cover
From all the research I did, I created a front cover for my school magazine, using my inspirtation from existing publications. I would then go on to looking at ways of improving the codes and conventions. -
Creating my contents page
My next step was to make my contents page. -
Critical Research
This is when I really started to break down the codes and conventions of music magazines as opposed to school magazines and look at what elements make them successful publications. -
Annotating NME
I annotated NME as a way of again, being able to see how all the little details can compose a successful, and effective magazine. -
Researching typography
When looking at typography, I wanted to use the bold effect of 'College Life' (school magazine) masthead but combine it with a musical influence of magazines such as NME and Clash. -
Linking back to my first photoshoot
I loved the way that my images from my first photoshoot came out in the end because of the subtle colours and interesting composition. However, I thought I would take it a step further for my music magazine and plan my model's outfit as well as her look to ensure that my theme stays constant throughout my magazine -
Front Cover Mock Plan
My mock plan was composed of many codes and conventions that were present in my preliminary task and therefore showcased how I was influenced by my original ideas. -
Mock Plan Contents
I took ideas from my contents page from the preliminary task and edited them so that they could fit my genre of a music magazine accordingly. -
Mock Plans Double Page Spread
I then had to plan out my double page spread which I found hard as I didn't have to include it in to my preliminary task because I didn't have as much research as I did for my other components. -
Editing my masthead
I decided to expand on my ideas and experiment with different coloured mastheads which was a development of my original ideas from my preliminary task. -
Final Cover
This is my final cover for my music magazine. As you can see, I have incorporated quite a few elements of inspiration from my preliminary task of the school magazine. I have also learnt many aspects along the way such as the fact that a more subdued colour palette would work best for my genre as opposed to the general feel of a school magazine. -
FInal Contents page
This is my final contents page and you can also see evidence here of factors that I have used from my original ideas. These are ideas such as having a picture as the whole background and having larger sized page numbers. -
Final Double Page Spread
This is my final double page spread. Although I didn't have to create a double page spread for my preliminary task, you can still see influences from my first task and research such as the strong use of pictures. -
Summary of question
I have learnt so much about the way that magazines are presented and composed from my journey from my prelimary task to my final products. It has definitely helped me to expand on my ideas and themes that could have been left un-noticed if I didn't have my first task to reflect upon.
