Portuguese sailor who sailed for Spain. He led the first European voyage to circumnavigate the globe. -

Magellan's Expedition
During Magellan's expedition, he pushed his crew to keep going, saying that they would arrive soon. He was wrong, and the voyage took several more months, and he was killed in the Philippines. Out of the over 200 sailors and 5 ships, they returned to spain with 18 sailors and one ship. The survivors were the first crew to circumnavigate the globe. -

The Happy Return
Dutch ships return went to Africa and built settlements. When they returned to Netherlands after a year, they brought spices and wealth. -
The Dutch East India company
Trading company founded by the Dutch in 1602 to protect their trade in the Indian Ocean and to help them win their war for independence against Spain. The company found success during most of the 17th century. It was dissolved in 1799. -
Japanese ban Western merchants
Japan originally welcomed Western traders, who brought Western firearms and designs for castles. After learning about the Philippines, Japanese shoguns became suspicious of Europeans. Japanese ban Western merchants and ban Japanese from traveling abroad for 215 years.
