Battle of Britain
In September of 1940 the US agreed to transfer 50 old destroyers to the British Fleet in exchange for naval bases in the Western Hemisphere. The lend-lease act went into affect and Hitler saw it as a declaration of was and ordered attacks on American ships. The British won the Battle of Britain and saved the islands from immediate invasion. But Hitler was angry and began bombing cities in England. The bombings then stopped when Hitler turned his attention to the Soviet Union -
Operation Sea Lion
Operation Sea Lion was the planned German invasion of the British Isles which required them to have air control of the English Channel. From June to October of 1941 German Luftwaffe fought the Royal Air Force for air control. Despite having had fewer planes than the Germans, the British won and saved the islands from immediate invasion -
Operation Barbarossa
Hitler broke the German-Soviet non-aggression pact on June 22, 1941. Germany was hoping to capture agricultural lands, seize several oil fields and take down the Soviet Union. Germany invaded the Soviet Union which is now known as the largest land invasion in history. The Germans has several successes during the Operation but eventually the harsh Moscow winters took a toll on them. Their troops began to starve and freeze to death. Over 25 Million German soldiers died and they were unsuccessful. -
Operation Torch
The first of the American troops entered the war and landed in Morocco. By 1943 the Allies pushes Axis forces out of Africa. American and British air forces relentlessly bombed Germany but the advanced German technology allowed fighters to easily shoot down the American and British bombers. However the advanced technology of the long range escort fighter let the bombers his their targets more accurately while other fighters confronted opposing German aircraft. -
Operation Overload
Operation Overload also known as D-Day was when The Western Allies of World War II launched the largest invasion in history. The Allies failed to reach their goals for the first day but eventually gained a large foothold that gradually expanded as they captured more locations. Eventually after several invasions and the Liberation of Paris, the German forces retreated across the Seine. -
Yalta Conference
Sometimes called the Crimea Conference and code named Argonaut Conference. It was held from February 4th to 11th, 1945. It was a World War II meeting comprised of the heads of government of the US, UK and the Soviet Union. It was held to discuss Europes post-war reorganization and was held in the Livadia Palace near Yalta.
