  • Treaty of Campo Formio

    Ending of First coalition war. Gave French Republic several former Austrian Territories. Early French Napoleonic Imperialism.
  • Napoleon Invades Egypt

    Begins Massive expansion of French Empire under napoleon. Begins massive French expansion. Example of Early French Imperialism.
  • French Invasion of Spain

    French invade Spain as acto of Imperialism. Yes, more Napoleonic imperialism.
  • Napoleonic Invasion of Russia

    Napoleon attempted to invade Russia to disrupt Russian trade with England. This was also done as an attempt to conquer Russian lands.
  • Congress of Vienna

    Congress of Vienna from September 1814 to June 1815. European powers meet to divide up Europe and decide on what to do with Napoleon's Empire. Established the idea of legitimacy allowing for European monarchs to habe Imperialism.
  • Battle of Waterloo

    Napoleon finally defeated and exiled to St. Helena. Ends Massive French Imperialism.
  • Founding of Singapore

    Singapore, in the southern tip of modern day Malaysia, was founded as by Sir Stamford Raffles as an English trade outpost. It had a valuable trade posistion due to its' control of a straight who's passage could be taxed.
  • French Conquest of Algeria

    Spannig from 1830-1837, the French Empire conquers modern day Algeria giving early examples of European African Imperialism.
  • Belgian Independence

    Belgium Starts Fight for Independence from The Dutch. Important because Belgium became an important factor in imperialism.
  • Slavery Abolition act of 1833

    Slavery abolished in all British territories meaning that having slaves will not be a focus of the Britsh holdings in Africa.
  • First Opium War

    Ending in 1842, the Opium war was France and England against China. The Chinese had become addicted to Opium causing an undesirable balance of trade. This angered chinese officials and they went to war with the British. The Chinese were humiliated and lost.
  • Treaty of Nanking

    England forces China to sign humiliating treaty allowing for lease of Hong Kong to British for 99 years. It also created English spheres of influence in Chinese cities. They obeyed English laws and the Chinese got nothing out of it.
  • Second Sikh War.

    Sikh Emprie revolts against British Resulting in British almost completely destroying Sikh Empire.
  • Taiping Rebellion

    The taiping, who were Christian, lead a rebellion against the Qing rulers. lasting 14 years, this lead to a crushing defeat. This helped keep China in the dynastic system.
  • Indian Mutiny

    Indians revolt against British control of India. This was suppressed and ultimately resulted in not a lot but death.
  • Second Opium War

    Ended in 1860. British weren't satisfied with results of treaty of nanking and wanted mroe territory and more ports. This lead to more undair treatment of the Chinese.
  • Exchange of power in India

    The control of India went from being controlled by the east India company to the English. This is important because Indial went from being controlled by a capitalist country to an actual empire.
  • French intervention in Mexico

    The French began to interfere in Mexico. The US demanded withdrawl and the French eventually left and their puppet emperor was executed. This was an example of failed French imperialism
  • Italian Unification

    This is thet date that Italy unified. Italy became involved in some failed imperialism in Ethiopia and was an important event in the history of Imperialism.
  • Treaty of Saigon

    This treaty gave the French claim in Vietnam or Indo-China. This is an example of French imperialism.
  • French protectorate over Cambodia established.

    French control of Indo-China was increaed and this is another example of French Imperialism.
  • Canadian Independence

    Canada became a fully federated state. Although it is still technically a part of The British Commonwealth, this was a great example of early British imperialism that was ended. This allowed The British to focus more power on Chinese and African Imperialism.
  • Franco-Prussian War

    A Bismarck lead Prussia defeated the French. This created the German Emprie. This is important to imperialism because Germany would become a future imperialist.
  • Second Treaty of Saigon

    French took control of all of South Vietnam. This would eventually culminate in the Vietnam War.
  • Berlin Conference

    This conference let the new European powers take control of Africa. This is very important in the history of Imperialism.
  • Establishment of Vietnam

    France Established Vietnam as an official colony and this is yet another example of European Imperialism.
  • Creation of Congo Free State.

    King leopold of Belgium got the Congo to himself and established it as a free state. This was the worst of imperialism and this killed a lot of people.
  • Creation of French West Africa

    The French Empire established territory in west Africa. They forced them to become like the French. This was ultimately very bad.
  • Second Boer War

    The first European settlers of South Africa were Dutch later called the Boers. The Boers revolted against British and lost.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    The Boxer rebellion was a rebellion against the British spheres of influence. The boxerrs believed that they were immune to bullets. They were not.
