  For several years, people had begun to think about revolting. But, it was not until 1568 that they began physically rebel

  Phillip II was the ruler when the revolution started. If it was a different ruler, the outcome might have changed.

  The people of the Netherlands area wanted to not be a part of Spain. Spain did not like this new idea.

  The first full on raid on Spain was in 1568. it was lead by Prince William I. This raid was unsuccessful.

  Prince Williams I thought he would try again. That was not a good idea(he failed again).

  The irregular Dutch (aka the Geuzen) decide to lead the second raid. This raid was successful.

  In the end of 1573, the Geuzen had captured the provinces of Holland and Zeeland. Most of these people were converted to Calvinist.

  The Geuzen continued to recruit. Many other provinces had joined the rebellion by 1576.

  More people were converted to Calvinism and were captured by the Geuzen. This resulted in the creation of the a general onion.

  The Union was going strong up until this time. The Roman Catholic Walloon provinces gave the Union a large beating(but not to defeat)

  The Dutch declared independence. This was the official date.

  In this year, Spain was preoccupied with fighting England and France. Therefore, (by 1609), the Dutch home line had been secured

  By 1588, Spain had gained back back all of the lower provinces. They were ready to end it, but that didnt happen

  Fighting began again between Spain and The Union. this is a basic part of the 30 year's war

  Phillip IV was the ruler of Spain until 1621. He then gave up the throne to his son, Charles III. (the picture is of Phillip)

  After 1625, Prince Fredrick Henry of Orange was the new leader of the Union. He secured several victories.

  France allies with the Dutch. This was a very important, and key movement.

  The Franco-Dutch alliance proved to be very useful. They beat the Spanish Walloon and drove back the others(in an unknown year, i couldn't find it)

  The Dutch gather all of their last resources. The Dutch prepare to execute their last attack. Spain finally recognizes Dutch independence.

  The Dutch has already gained independence at this point. The United Provinces of the Netherlands is formed.
