The colony was formed and it was the birth of the gold fields. -
Licences
Miners had to pay 1 pound, 30 shillings for a licence to mine gold. -
Governor Hotham
Governor Hotham came to power and set up licence checks twice a week. People started getting mad. -
Murder of James Scobie
James Scobie gets murdered after a fight at the Eureka Hotel. James was struck across the head with a shovel. Many people believed the hotel owner, James Bentley had killed Scobie. -
Hearing over Death of Scobie
Hearing held and James Bentley was acquitted over the murder. -
Burning of the Bentley/Eureka Hotel
The diggers held a meeting to bring James Bentley and the murderers to justice. After the meeting the group of diggers burned the hotel to the ground. Three diggers were arrested and charged with arson. -
The Meeting
10,000 diggers met to protest the prosecution of the three diggers, the licence and the vote for all males. The Ballarat Reform League was created as a result of this meeting. -
James Bentley Convicted
James and two others are arrested and convicted of manslaughter. -
Burning of Licences
On the 29th and 30th of November there were mass burnings of mining licences. At these burnings they displayed the Southern Cross Flag and under the leadership of Peter Lalor the diggers constructed the stockade. -
Governor Hotham Calls For Backup
Governor Hotham called the military for assistance, as he thought the miners were going to rebel. -
Eureka Stockade
In the early hours of the morning the stockade was attacked by police and military. 22 miners and 5 soldiers died during the 20 minute battle. -
Miners held for Treason
13 miners were held for treason. -
13 Miners Released
All 13 miners were released. Only one journalist was imprisoned for sharing news of the rebellion -
Miner's Rights Met
The Gold Fields Commission handed down its report, and the government adopted all of its recommendations. The Commission resulted in all the demands of the diggers being met. -
Peter Lalor Becomes a MLC
Peter Lalor later became the first MLC (Member of the Legislative Council) for the seat of Ballarat. The Ballarat miners were given eight representatives on the Legislative Council.
