Battle of Stalingrad
-Germany/Hitler VS. Soviet Union/Stalin, the Luftwaffe bombed the city and Stalin ordered not to back down.
-The Germans evaded the city and conquered many housed in hand-to-hand combat.
-In the winter Stalin surrounded the city and starved Hitler's army. -German commander surrendered on January 31,1943. -
Operation TORCH
-This was an invasion of Axis-controlled North Africa, lead by Dwight D. Eisenhower.
-They invaded Casablanca, Oran and Aligiers to chase out Afrika Korps.
-After fighting the Korps surrendered in May 1943 -
Operation OVERLORD
-This was an invade of France and Free Western Europe from the Nazis.
-General Dwight D. Eisenhower was in command of this operation, he planned to attack Normandy, France.
- The attack happened on June 6, 1944, D-Day -
D-Day
-3 million British, American and Canadian troops invaded Normandy, France
-Omaha Beach was were the Germans tried to retaliate, but many people died and were injured.
-Omar Bradley lead a massive air and land bombardment agianst enemy at St. Lô providing a gap in German line.
-George S. Patton Jr. was the general of the third army that advanced through German lines. He reached river south of Paris and liberated the French capital. -
Battle of the Bulge
-America captured first German town, Aachen.
-Hitlers army wanted to regain Belgian port of Antwerp, he killed many prisoners in a large field
-Battle lasted one month long
-After a month of fighting the Nazis retreated. -
Battle of the Atlantic
T-his battle was meant to prevent food and war supplies from reaching Great Britain & Soviet Union.
-Germans had destroyed a total of 681 of the Allies ships in order to keep supplies out of Britain & Soviet Union. America produced 140 Liberty ships.
-Tides were turned in the Allies favor. -
Buchenwald
-This was a concentration camp.
-This camp was eventually liberated. -
