An Upseting Pass
Miguel and Alfonso were looking for Papa while he should of been home already.Esperanza,Mama,Abuelita and Hortensia were home, but extremely worried.When Miguel and Alfonso returned,they had a body in the back of the truck.When the rest saw the body,Mama fainted and Esperanza began to cry.It was confirmed that Papa had passed on the day after Esperanzas birthday. -
New Lanlord
Mama was consulting with the lawyer the day after Papa's death.His brothers,Tio Luis and Tio Marco were in attendence.When the lawyer was consulting,Mama found out that Tio Luis was her new landlord.That means the income of the grapes would go to him. -
Ashes of a House
Esperanza was sleeping and dreaming, until something was shaking her.It started in her dreams ,but then it became rality.When she woke up,Mama was shaking her,signaling her to wake up.the house was on fire!Mama and Esperanza escaped the flames,but Abuelita was still inside.Miguiel found and rescued Abuelita, where she had a injured ankle. -
The Plan
Everyone was crowded at the servants courters.Everyone had no doubt that Tio Luis and Tio Marco caused the house to burn.Alfonso,Hortensia and Miguel planned to move to the U.S.A,where Alfonso's brother lives with his family.Mama asked them if she and Esperanza could go with them .Alfonso said yes. -
The Escape
Abuelita would stay in Mexico with her sisters until she recovered.Sr.Rodrigues had a cart ready for them in the middle of the night ,when no one was around.He also built a extra layer for Esperanza,Mama and Hortensia.Fruit would be onto that way the cart would be disguised as father and son delivering fruit to the market.They all woke up in the middle of the night traveled to Sr.Rodrigues's farm,said goodbye and left for the train station. -
Train Ride
Alfonso drove the cart to Zacatecas train station.When Esperanza and Miguel were little, they rode the first-class cart of the train because back then they were rich.This time they are riding the poor-class cart of the train.The cart was filled with "peasent",urine a bad oderThey had to go there beacause without income from the grapes,money gets very scarce. -
Immigration
Esperanza,Mama,Hortensia,Alfonso and Miguel were on the train for a good amount of time.They have arrived at the border of Mexico and the U.S.A..Imigration officials were scatteredall over the place.Mama stode in line to show the officers her papers.When they checked her,she passed.They were on the train to LosAngeles,California. -
Family Reunion
Esperanza was asleep when they got to L.A.Miguel woke her up.Outside,she saw Alfonso's brother,Juan,and his wife,Josefina.She also met Miguels younger cousin,Isabel.There,she gets on a cart and travel to their new home. -
Hearing Trouble
While traveling, the bunch stop for lunch.Josefina brought burritos.After lunch,Esperanza wandered off onto the hillside.She tride to listen to the earth's heartbeat to get her mind off things,but nothing was heard.when she got back on the road,she met a girl named Marta. -
A Broken Fuse
Marta got off the cart when they finally arrived to their new homes,but Esperanza was upset.She compared the small house to the horse stalls back in Mexico.She kept arguing with Mama,not yet accepting that she is now poor. -
Strike Warning
The family went to the jamaicas(party)that evening.Alot of people from the camp were there as well.During the jamaicas,Marta and her friends start to hold tiny kittens in their hands.They gave a speech of hoe they want better pay and better living conditions.They want to improve this by having a job risking strike. -
Dust Storm
Mama,Hortensia,Alfonso,Juan,Josefina and Miguel were working and Isabel was at school.Esperanza was home taking care of Lupe and Pepe.Melina and Irene came over and they chatted outside.In the distance, a brown cloud was spotted.Melina said it was a dust storm.Everyone ran inside and closed the door.Esperanza was worried about Mama. When the wind stoped,Melina and Irene left. -
Valley Fever
After the storm,Mama gets sick.When the docter came over to check her out,he finds out that she got Valley Fever.A few days later,Mamas condition worsen.She had to go to the hospital!Esperanza was heartbroken.First her father,now Mama.When Mama went to the hospital,Esperanza promised her that she would takecare of the family now. -
Strike and Immigration
Esperanza began to work in the fields to take Mama's place.While it was asparigus season,Esperanza was working in the shed with Hortensia and Josefina,untill they heard a riot outside.The strike had started,rioting everyone working.Then,there was silence.When they looked outdide,Immigration officials tried to scoop up all the strikers,put them on a bus and return them to Mexico.When Esperanza was looking for rubberbands,she found Marta.Esperanza felt bad for Marta,she gave her an apron and a bu- -

Isabel tells Esperanza all about school.They would pick the Queen of May.usually its an american girl,its never been a Mexican.For 2 weeks Isabel and Esperanza pray so that Isabel can be the Queen of May.When the time has come,Isabel had not been chosen to be Queen of May. -
A Return
The docter sais that finally Mama's condition is getting better.In a few day's,she could be home.Esperanzas heart was filled with joy.A few days later,Mama came back home!Everyone were delighted to have Mama back. -
A Satisfing End
Miguel ran away to upper California with all of Esperanzas savings.While working,Alfonso picked up Esperanza and Hortensia to go to the train station.When they arrived,Miguel was there with an old woman.It was Abuelita!When Eperanza saw her ,could not belive her eyes.When everyone was home,A family reunion began.
