    It starts by showing the relationship that Ezperanza and her father share. Later you learn that Esperanza is an only child and that she is turning thirteen.Papa is late coming home and Esperanza begins to worry. You also meet abuelita whom Ezperanza looks up to as her grandmother. She pricks her hand on a rose bringing bad luck and later she finds her papa was murdered by thieves.

    It starts by Esperaqnza waking up to her house on fire. Tio luiz is still trying to get the property so Esperanza agree to move to the United States for a better life. They sneak out and set on their wat to Zactecas to head to California, where they will settle.

    Ezperanza and her familt continue on their way to California. They head to another train after crossing the border. Finally, they arrive in California.

    They meet Juan, Josefina, Isabel and the two babies. These are also the family of Alfonso one of the old family workers for Esperanza's family that wanted to help them in America. Ezperanza begins to realize how different her life is in America.

    Alfonzo and Miquel welcome Esperanza by surprising her with a statue of Lady Guadalupe sourrounded by the roses from her old home. Esperanza is touched and she begins to rethink on her attitude towards the new changes. Later, a large dust storm hits the camp and her mother gets valley fever.

    Esperanza continues to learn lessons of her new life by learning from Miguel, looking up to Isabel's simple lifestyle and keeping hope in her mama. Later, mama gets phemonia and Esperanza learns about the prejustice of Mexicans while she discovers the worse camps and attitudes of the people. Finally, they celebrate because Miguel gets a job as a railroad worker!

    As Joesifina and Esperanza are working they witness the strikers that get removed and sent back to Mexico. Esperanza sees Marta hiding and helps her instead of turning her in to the immigration officials with the rest of the strikers. Miguel dissapears due to his job being taken by the Oklahoma people. Her mama is released and Esperanza gives her doll from her dad to Isabel to cheer her up.

    They go to meet up with Miguel who has brought abuelita back from Mexico. They surprise everyone and Esperanza begins to lean to let go and be free. In the end, abuelita shows her her first stickes in crochet and tells her it it's okay to start over, referring to starting over her life in a better way.
