    The Beginnings

    After having been home schooled to the age of 14 and attending high school for three years, Mach entered the University of Vienna at age 17. After receiving his doctorate in physics in 1860 he continue on to teach physics and mechanics for the next four years.

  • Compendium der Physik für Mediciner

    While teaching a course in physics for medical students Mach develops his textbook 'Compendium der Physic für Mediciner'. In the same time he publishes his first article on psychophysics which focuses on the connection of eye muscle tension and form perception. This article is titled 'Über das Sehen von Lagen und Winkeln durch die Bewegung des Auges.'

    New Findings

    While in Prague Mach studied kinesthetic sensation. During this time he also developed optical and photographic techniques for measuring sound waves and wave propagation. It was during this time, in 1887, he developed the principles of supersonics and the now famous Mach number.
