Ernst Mach b: 18 Febuary 1838

  • Graduated from the University of Vienna

Ernst Mach received his Doctorate in physics and mathematics.
  • Acoustics, Optics, and Doppler

From 1860 and 1862, Mach worked along side Andreas von Ettingshausen were they worked on the experiments of acoustic sound and optics. Around this time, Mach developed a device that demonstrated the claim from Christian Doppler was true "The Doppler Effect". “Ernst Mach Biography, Life, Interesting Facts.” Famous Birthdays By SunSigns.Org, 4 Apr. 2018, www.sunsigns.org/famousbirthdays/d/profile/ernst-mach/.
  • Professor at University of Graz

Around 1864, Mach decided to become a Professor at the University of Graz. Graz is a town in the southeast corner of Austria. He taught mathematics and physics there. He spent approximately 3 years there and decide to leave in 1867.
  • Mach Bands

Before Mach published this book, what we knew about optical illusions were simply called "error in judgement". But Mach fore fronted the idea that our senses pre-process information before sending it to the brain (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). • Physics Professor at Charles University

In 1867, Mach ended up becoming a Physics Professor at Charles University in Prague. He would only stay there for three years.
  • Super-Sonic Motion "Mach Bullet"

In 1887, Mach published a paper that gave the world a better understanding of supersonic speeds. Hence his name being the foundation of the "Mach Numbers". His work in Super-Sonic Motion still being used by scientists and pilots. His paper also included a photo of a bullet traveling at supersonic speeds.

Mach became a professor of the Theory of Inductive Science department. He would stay there until he retired in 1901.
  • The Science of Mechanics

Mach published the "The Science of Mechanics" in 1902. This was his analysis and ideas on absolute space. A lot of Mach's work was the basis of Einsteins later developments and theories. Einstein would coin the name "Mach's Principle" to some related ideas that were in "Science of Mechanics". “The Science Of Mechanics : Dr. Ernst Mach : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming.” Internet Archive, The Open Court Publishing Co., 1 Jan. 1970, archive.org/details/scienceofmechani005860mbp.
